Stoorn - a huge wooden moose in Northern Sweden
Inventor of the idea to build the world's largest moose is Thorbjorn Holmlund, founder and owner of Svansele Wild Life Centre Inc. Svansele Wild Life Centre was founded in 2001. Latest news 25 of January is that the Environmental Court of Sweden has approved the building!
May 2008 I have heard that funds are there to start the building now. I will keep you posted!
About the big Moose Stoorn
On the border of Lapland, between the counties of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, mount Vithatten (White hat), 510 meters (1 673 feet) above the sea level, is situated and this is where this enormous moose is going to be placed. On a clear day you are able to see 9 church towers from the top of the mountain. Among these the church of Skellefteå town about 85 km (52,8 miles) away.The outlook 45 meters (147 feet) above the top of Vithatten, is offering views including both alps and sea, besides forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands as well as cities and villages.
The moose is to be placed with two legs in the community of Arvidsjaur in Lapland, Norrbotten county, and two legs in the community of Skellefteå, Västerbotten county.
Thorbjön Holmlund got the opportunity to see the view from the eyes of the moose, hovering in a helicopter 45m above Vithatten. Why was this the defining moment? Well according to Thorbjörn the view was even more amazing than he could've ever imagined. With Vithatten's 511m + the height of which the helicopter was hovering, he was able to see the mountains, the sea, rivers, villages and all types of landscapes that are unique for this area in Sweden.
The result of Thorbjörn whitnessing this tremendously beautiful view was that NO other place would stand a chance as to where the moose should be positioned. Should it be built, Vithatten would be the place.

The calculated construction cost for Stoorn is SEK 60 million, including inventory and technical equipment to equip the conference facilities and for the purchase of the land. The concert hall and conference facilities are intended to be of a high standard, so that their appeal and the professional status of the facility will be maintained. The purchase of land for road connections is not included in the building costs, whereas the cost for laying roads and walkways as well as car parks is included.

The 5th om May 2008 there was a Year meeting in Norrbotten. Stoorn will be built and the construction will start this spring.This 45 meters high animal will be a big tourist attraction!
This is how Stoorn will be
To enter the moose you'll either ride along the road that will be built all the way to the top, or use the wood-paths alongside the mountain. On the top you'll enter the pinetree in wich the elevator will lift you 35 m to the mouth. Inside the moose there will be 3 floors with a surface of ca 500 m², the content of these floors will be conference-rooms / exhibitions / consert-hall etc. The neck will contain the kitchen and the restaurant with a surface of 250 m². The outdoor café will be on top of the antlers and will have a surface of 100 m². Land owners around Vithatten has complained about this project. The permission to build is still on hold. In a fantastic Northern Dialect Torbjörn Holmlund is telling about Stoorn. Even if it is in Swedish you have to see how happy he is now when the Environmental Court of Sweden has approved the building and the ones who complained have been turned down. He says that Stoorn will be as big as the Ice hotel for Tourism in Northern Sweden.Companies that are supplying the material is now lining up 'smile'

Stoorn is a giant wooden elkThe word "elk" is here used in the European sense, what is normally referred to as a "moose" in American English. The American elk is an animal more similar to the red deer. planned to be built in northern Norrland in Sweden. The elk, intended as a tourist attraction, will be 45 m (148 ft) high, 47 m (154 ft) long, and will contain three floors of 500 m2 each, and one floor of 250 m2. It will hold a restaurant, conference centre and a 350-capacity concert hall. There will be a panorama deck in the antlers. Access to the body of the elk will be through an elevator in a large pine tree the elk will appear to be biting on.
The elk is of such magnitude that while its front legs will be positioned in Arvidsjaur municipality in the county of Norrbotten, the hind legs will be in Skellefteå in Västerbotten. Because of these circumstances, it took a while for the $9 million project to get approval, but in November 2007 it received its go-ahead, and building is planned to start before the end of the year.
The name "Stoorn" means "the big one" in the local dialect.
