Stop Depression by Improving Low Thyroid Function

When it comes to low thyroid function, weight gain, thinning hair, and fatigue get all of the press.  One of the most important of the symptoms of thyroid problems is depression.

When a person goes into a doctor's office complaining of depression, thyroid problems are usually not on the top of the list of differentials.  This is unfortunate, since a large portion of those with depression can be traced back to an issue with the thyroid (not to mention the fact that medications like lithium that are commonly used in cases of depression can actually lower the thyroid hormone even more).

How does low thyroid hormone cause depression?

The single problem of low thyroid hormones can cause depression through many different ways.

Low thyroid causes low metabolism and low brain activity, causes poor circulation to the brain through low blood pressure and low red blood cell production, and it causes fatigue which increases the odds that a person will not be as physically active.

This is especially the case in times of high stress on the body that requires more thyroid to be utilized by the body, such as: Pregnancy, long bouts of exercise, winter months, high stress situations, etc.

While medication is an important part of a complete treatment program, it is ultimately only a replacement for the low thyroid hormone.  It does not take into account the problem that is actually causing the gland to produce low thyroid hormone, the decrease in conversion to the active form of thyroid hormone and/or the utilization of thyroid hormone at the receptor level.

Natural Solutions to Depression

That Are Completely Safe and Extremely Powerful

When a person comes into a doctor's office with complaints of depression, it is often assumed by the doctor that there is some aberrancy in brain chemistry. Sometimes underlying issues such as thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, toxicities, or poor brain stimulation go unrecognized.

Medications that are often prescribed for depression are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects a person's mood when utilized in the brain. The drug affects serotonin by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter that is not bound to the receptor. This increases the possibility of serotonin binding to the receptor as it spends more time around the receptor site.

This treatment is effective when there is a low sensitivity of the receptors to serotonin or a low production of serotonin. However, using medication like this does have its drawbacks.

If the receptors have a low sensitivity for serotonin, flooding them with greater amounts of serotonin for longer a time will only decrease their sensitivity more. An analogy would be listening to somebody with an annoying voice and you trying to tune them out. The person with the annoying voice sees that you are trying to tune them out and gets a microphone to make themselves louder so that you can hear them. Now you're really annoyed and you put in earplugs to try to block out their annoying voice, making it even harder for the annoying person to get heard.

If there is a low production of serotonin naturally, flooding the body with synthetic serotonin will cause a down regulation of production of natural serotonin. An analogy would be when body builders use steroids to build bigger muscles. The steroids have testosterone in them, which you normally make naturally. Once the body realizes that there is enough testosterone already, it stops producing it naturally. This is why the ever known side effect of shrinking of the testicles (which produces testosterone) takes place. Same type of negative feedback loop goes on in the brain with serotonin.

A solution to depression is creating your own serotonin by improving precursor nutrients, improving the sensitivity of the receptors to bind with the neurotransmitter, and increasing brain activity so that there is a need for the creation and utilization of neurotransmitters.

Specific nutrients like vitamin B6, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, 5-HTP, EFAs, St. John's wart, Phosphatidylserine, and S-adenosyl-L-methionine are all required or helpful in the production or utilization of serotonin.

Applying this with a metabolically appropriate exercise program, counseling and specialized diet and you have got yourself one powerful way to treat depression.

Just Give Me a Big Fat Brain and I'll Be Happy

Stop Depression By Eating Fats

With all of the hype on low fat diets, people often forget that fat is an absolutely critical part of our diet. While the recommended daily consumption of trans fats is 0, 30% of the food we eat should be fat.

Why is this so important?

Besides the fact that your heart uses mostly fat for energy, your hormones are created from them, it acts as both insulation and a storage area for energy, and aids in the absorption of certain nutrients, your brain is made up of 60% fat.

Since your brain is reliant on fat to work, it should not be too hard to fathom that getting the right fats is important to how your brain functions.

It doesn't matter if you eat healthy, crash diet or eat the SAD diet (standard American diet), the amount of fats you eat, when you eat them and the ratios that you eat them are all important factors.

Much has been publicized on Omega-3 fats and heart protection. It is known that a ratio of Omega-3 fats to Omega-6 should be 1:1, where 1:4 is acceptable (and 1:25 is about the average).

But this lens is on depression, so we will build on that.

Omega-3 oils are made up of EPA and DHA. EPA is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, whereas DHA is known for its brain building properties.

Normally, adults want an EPA to DHA ratio of 3:2. In times of depression, during pregnancy and while breast feeding or if it a child below age 10, you want to have that ratio flipped (2:3).

Post partum depression is often due to low DHA, since the mom gives a good portion of hers to her child during pregnancy and breast feeding. The same can happen to people that do not take in enough DHA to enable their brain to function properly.

Uncontrollable depression can often be attributed to poor cell signaling, which DHA has a primary influence over. You can measure your fat levels and ratios through a simple blood test.

***Caution. Many of the foods and supplements that contain these oils are sources that are contaminated with metals, chemicals, dyes and may have turned rancid in the handling/storage. Purchase from non-farm raised animal sources, or organically grown plants.***
