Easy Tricks To Stop Dog Whining

When trying to stop dog whining it helps to know why they do it in the first place. Typically your dog will whine for the following reasons:

1. They are hurt (this one is understandable and isn't a behavioral problem)

2. They are scared

3. They feel lonely/want your attention

4. They want food from the table (OK..I threw that one in because that was one of our dog's favorite tricks!)

The key to stopping dog whining (unless it's pain related) is to know exactly why they are doing it and correct the behavior based on the "whine trigger".

Dog feels scared- Reprimanding your dog or getting angry with them when they are scared will only increase their fear (and that darned whining!). Instead find ways to comfort your dog. Does he whine in the car? Try bringing comforting things like a favorite blanket or toy. Also, try taking your dog on very short car rides, even just around the block, to get him used to the car. Gradually increase the car ride time and try and give him a small treat when he's good. If he assocaites car rides with positive things (and not just a trip to the vet) the whining should stop in time.

Stop Dog Whining For Attention- If you really have been neglecting your dog stop and spend some time with him. But if he is always whining for your attention learn to ignore him. If he doesn't stop tell him to stop with a firm voice. I had a friend that used a water bottle to give her dog a squirt in the face when her dog wouldn't stop whining. It seemed cruel but you know what? It worked. So if all else fails try it (it is only water!)

Dog Whines Because they Miss You- This one's kind of like getting a baby to fall asleep on their own. Leave the dog in a room and walk away so they can't follow you. Even when your dog whines stay away for a certain amount of time (try 5 to 10 minutes at first. Then come back and spend some love-y time with your dog. Gradually increase the time away until they learn to stop whining. Whatever you do don't give in and go back before the time is up or the dog is training you!

They whine at the table- Chances are someone was feeding that dog at the table ( I blame my husband!) No more food scraps at the table...ever! Make it clear to everyone and stick to it. Tell you dog to go lie down in a firm voice then ignore him. If all else fails try that water squirt technique (my friend still swears by it!).
