How to Stop Nail Biting
This outward sign could be a signal of emotional or mental disorder. It can also be the effect of OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

No parent would want would his or her child to grow up biting off his nails. Nor would any adult want to grow old with this unconscious tendency.
Medical records show that 98% of male juveniles (aged 15-22) have this disorder. 5% are old adults, and about 28%-33% are children aged 7-10 years.
Looking at these numbers, you would be right to conclude that the records are alarming.
What are the negative outcomes of biting one's nails? Primarily, bacteria could easily be taken to the mouth by such practice.
Scientific studies show that there are many bacteria living under the fingernails that can be difficult to clean.
Viral infections may also be found on any broken skin on the hand. These pathogens are easily spread by the saliva.
And since onychopahgia is mild self-mutilation, the fingers become susceptible to pain in due time.
Looking at all the negative effects and the numbers that have succumbed to this disorder, it is time to stop the habit.
First, have an absolute resolve to stop it. Although it is an unconscious habit, it is best to have a mind set that you are trying to set a goal for yourself.
But having firm resolution isn't sufficient. The next step is to look for help.
Behavioral therapy tops the list. Since this is a behavioral disorder, it is best to consult a therapist to help solve the problem.
Habit Rehearsal Training
This is a four-part procedure which would 'reverse' the disorder.
There are cases when nail biting is seen to have responded well to medication. The medications are mostly anti-depressants.
Examples include fluoxetine, clomipramine, paroxetine, sertraline, citalopram, fluvoxamine, escitalopram, venlafaxine or nefazodone.
There are also medications that are given to patients with schizophrenia such as olazapine, ziprasidone, risperidone, quetiapine and aripiprazole.
It is best to explain to the patient that the anti-psychosis drugs are not for psychotics only but are also being used to treat disorders such as oncychophagia.
Aversion therapies are also good ways of preventing nail biting. Such therapies include coating the fingernails (or toenails) with a substance that tastes awful.
This substance could come in the form of a gel deodorant, hot sauce or nail polish. Another aversion technique is to wear a rubber band on the nail biter's wrist.
Once you notice him biting off his nails, you could snap the rubber band to make him realize what he's doing. Some people also switch to chewing gum instead of biting off their nails.
With their mouths busy with the gum, it would not automatically turn to the fingers of the hands.
Although some people find these effective, some find them useless. For those who think that aversion techniques are poor ways of getting off the habit, there are other ways. One other way is to undergo hypnosis. Yes. There are now hypnotic methods that solve nail biting. Some can be downloaded on the net. These products promise to stop not only the nail biting but also to make the person a more confident human being.
There are so many ways to solve the problem. All one has to do is to be determined in what he's doing and he's on his way to being healed.
