No doubt this idea could be seen as contentious by many people and it is a goal of mine that all the worlds smokers could manage to quit smoking cigarettes but bear with me for a bit. Just a few weeks ago I was going through Londons Heathrow International Airport, and was held over for a night and had to take a hotel for the night. Spotting some people smoking cigarettes outside the terminal and being in no hurry to grab the shuttle bus going to our hotel I thought I may as well query each of them their stance on the smoking bans in airports. The answers given were suprising plus thoughtful.

Each of them said they had no problems coping with the smoking bans in their day to day life and see no problem with going out to have a cigarette when at work or out on the town. On the other hand they do have a problem in that there are no facilities once passed security in airports and I began to see their point.

I was advised by nearly all of them to understand that they may have just got off a long-haul flight then going on another long flight. So if they wished to popping out to have a cigarette they were confronted with a dificulty. To start with leave the gate area and also they may need to deal with passport control. Then somewhere to have a cigarette needs to be seeked out. Then after they were finished it is neccesary to go through airport security and maybe again facing passport control, while dragging their cabin luggage with them.

I began to think, why not have a place for smoking inside the secure area like there were before? Some excellent ones used to be around with top-notch air exchange systems and negative air pressure. These systems worked so well that you had to almost be sitting on top of them to smell the smoke. Or better yet would be to erect an outdoor smoking area. On one of my trips when transfering via the airport in Miami I spotted quite an interesting place to smoke within the departure area. It was a courtyard out in the open air but still within the secure area of the terminal. So couldn't the airport authorities construct the same type of thing such as an outdoor balcony?

After all air terminals are an unusual situation and unlike from our usual daily life couldn't we ease up on the smokers a little in this case?
