Quit Drinking Soft Drinks

Why Are They So Unhealthy, You Ask?

Cut out the soda to improve your smile, strengthen your bones, and more...

Of course this is coming from someone who is hopelessly addicted to Dr. Pepper, who has just had his first top plate made because of the enamel erosion.

Besides all of that, which do you call it? Join the pop vs. soda controversy.

Now I have gotten a lot of feed back from people who have already quit. How about the rest of us? Tell me what you think!

Also, soon I will be adding a new product that I have now been asked to sell, that is possibly going to move me away from my Dr. Pepper. Sorry guys! I guess I'll probably cause some layoffs when I quit. heheh

1. Pop Increases Your Chance Of Obesity

The University of Texas Health Science Center
published a study in 2005, stating: drinking one to two cans of soft drinks per day can increase chances of weight gain by 32.8 percent.

Thinking diet pop is a solution? Nope. Researchers found the risk is even higher. The one or cans per day can increase by 54.5 percent. Some diet.

Thus, pop without an exercise routine to burn off the excess, can cause an overweight condition or even obesity.

2. That Coke And Diabetes And Heart Disease

Soda can put you at risk for diabetes and heart disease. The American Heart Association's publication Circulation found during a study conducted prior to 2007, that people who drink pop every day, either diet or regular, increased the risks of developing metabolic syndrome by as much as 44 percent. This condition helps to greatly increase the chances of several heart diseases and diabetes.

3. What About Soda's Environmental Concerns

Most people still do not recycle their bottles and cans. The sad fact is an estimated 50 billion aluminum cans and plastic bottles from soft drinks still get thrown into landfills every year.

And recycling doesn't let you off the hook either, the containers are still energy-intensive to mine, produce, and recycle.

Though if you recycled our products personally, cans in a cuppola furnace, and the polystyrene is easily shredded and melted back to a usable product via simple particulate molding techniques. Up coming lenses on those, I promise!

4. The Diuretic Factor Of Pop

Still feel thirsty?

Pop is likely to make you even more thirsty. Caffeine is a diuretic which is designed to remove water from your body.

Besides that, most of us don't realize that sugars of any kind block absorption of liquids back into your body.

Then, sugars turn into methanol in your system, then from methanol to formaldehyde, which is a naturally occurring chemical in your body, but in extremely small amounts.

If your body makes more than it's supposed to, it becomes hazardous to your system, and like I said it doesn't take much.

Water is the fuel of choice, but herbal teas and fruit juices are good options.

Coffee Or Pop?

Which is worse for your health?

Coffee

karmicchristian says:

I would rather say fresh fruit juice. Coffee or tea also goes. :)

Baron Von Blucher says:

I'm thinking some moderation is a good idea. I drink a cup of coffee without sugar and about 16 ounces of sugar free soda (sweetened with Splenda). The rest is iced tea or, God help me, water.
I'll pick coffee because to much makes me cranky.

coffee

Tammylove says:

Coffee, but if you love it I say enjoy every last drop. Life is short and if you can't enjoy your favorite beverage or other foods then it takes away from your quality of life. Just drink or eat in moderation and you'll be okay... too much of anything will kill you!

Soda Pop

spellbindingsisters says:

Soda for sure, they are packed full of cabs & sugars, the diet soda has aspartame which has been linked to cancers, Alzheimers and a ton of other health issues. I quit over two months ago...

bikerministry says:

I quit sodas January 1 - actually I had one Pepsi last weekend - that's all this year. Hey - I quit alcohol and drugs 33 years ago and never went back, but I quit sodas, for the cost, the bad habit it was bringing - I'd make excuses to do a drive through, and I read somewhere that if you take cola out of your life you can lose 20 lbs in a year ... lots of reasons. Still have that daily cup of coffee though.

ratetea says:

I think soda is definitely worse. Honestly, neither are great; coffee has a lot of caffeine and can be rough on the stomach, but soda is loaded up with sugar, and it's a totally artificial drink, in contrast to coffee which is at least all-natural.

Ramkitten says:

I would have to say soda (or pop) is worse. Coffee is a natural product at least, meaning from a plant. So that makes it seem healthier, anyway. And drunk in moderation, I've heard coffee can be beneficial. I've never heard that about soda at all.

alteredkat says:

I think probably pop

5. Soda's Digestion Problem?

The debates continue, but experts believe the phosphoric acid in these beverages will possibly disturb the fine balance of acid and alkaline in your stomach.

Resulting from this, soda drinkers may develop digestion distress, acid reflux, stomach inflammation, and intestinal erosion.

6. A Pop Addict?

The Archives of Family Medicine ran an article based on a study in 2000 called soft-drink manufacturers on the carpet.

The study found the manufacturers add caffeine to pop for one reason only. To get you addicted.

Though this is a minute addiction in the grand scheme of things, as it's not a subject for the war on drugs.

Caffeine is a stimulant. Once you are addicted you can still go through the same withdrawl symptoms as someone coming off of hard drugs. Including fatigue, depression, irritability, tremor sleep deprivation, and headaches.

7. Osteo - pop - orosis

Tufts University recently released a study of women who drank three 12-ounce colas per day will have a reduction of bone density by as much as 5 percent.

The research bares that the phosphoric acid in soda prevents the calcium from being absorbed by the body.

Also, a 2006 study, published in General Dentistry, reported that the citric and/or phosphoric acid in soft drinks can be harmful and corrosive to a healthy smile.

8. Everything Causes Cancer

While still controversial, some scientists believe that soda can increase your cancer risk. A 2006 study from Sweden's Karolinska Institutet supports the theory: Study subjects who drank high quantities of fizzy or syrup-based soft drinks twice a day or more ran a 90 percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who never drank them.

Prefer fresh fruit juice over soda or pop. Great lens to bring awareness. Thank you.

I've read health articles about pop or soda, and studies did indeed find that they can decrease bone density. I better quit drinking now than further weaken my bones.

I have had a DePuy Pinnacle hip implant in the past, and I'd do anything to optimize my health. Lately, there have been complaints from those injured with the Pinnacle device. I'm looking further into this at the DePuy Pinnacle Lawsuit website and trying to see if the device truly is defective.

Just water please. It was surprisingly easy for me to give up soft drinks.

It was the bone and calcium issues that finally made me quit drinking sodas. About once every 10 days or so I'll give in and have one, but that's it. I used to have one every day.

I'm a huge tea person, as you can see by the growing collection of tea-related lenses that I've created, and the site I created, RateTea. So I am perhaps a bit biased...but I do think that tea is an outstanding alternative to soda. I'm glad to see people warning about the dangers of soda! It's really not a good thing that people drink so much of it!

About The Author

James Aric Keith is one of several who keep the Dr Pepper bottlers from going bankrupt. I am, however, on a stop the pop run. You'd be surprised how much better I feel after filling up that water bottle about six to eight times per day. And yes, I recycle the bottle by filling the same bottle for about two weeks before adding it to the plastic pile.

ANYWAY...
