How To Stop Biting Your Fingernails

It's probably no longer a conscious thing - whenever you feel bored or stressed, you just start gnawing away at your finger nails.

Children do it all the time. Maybe even cleaning out the dirt from behind their nails with their teeth. Yuck!

So just how do you stop biting your fingernails?

Well, you could try will-power. A few people manage to quit their nail biting habit this way, but they're far and away in the minority. Anyway, if will-power worked for most people, there wouldn't be all the other nail biting cures available...

Next choice for most people is to use an evil tasting potion.

The idea is that if your nails taste nasty and bitter, you won't be tempted to bite them.

This can be surprisingly effective, especially with children.

Shop around and read the nail biting product reviews. You're looking for the most evil tasting solution it's possible to buy and use without poisoning yourself!

This could be an off-the-shelf potion - there are plenty to choose from. Just apply the solution regularly according to the directions on the pack.

One other thing before you start out on your journey to stop yourself from nail biting, it's worth your while getting rid of some of the temptation.

Unless you're really obsessive about biting your nails, you'll almost certainly leave some jagged edges after your biting session.

Use scissors, clippers or a nail file to get your nails as pristine as you can. Do this before you start any treatment and after any slip-ups when your old habit kicks back in and you have a quick nibble on your nails.

Other Ways To Stop Finger Nail Biting

Another way to help stop finger nail biting is to use a hypnosis MP3. These work by changing the way your mind thinks.

Most all the habits we have are ones that we have learned. Often years and years ago. We then do them without thinking.

You may bite your nails when you are stressed. Or it could be out of boredom. Or one of a host of other reasons.

Hypnosis doesn't care what these reasons are - it just gets on and works to change the habit. Your only contribution to the process is to site back and listen to a hypnosis MP3 file on your iPod or whatever.

The process usually takes a few listenings. I'd suggest that you listen to the MP3 once a day for the first week after you buy it (don't panic though if you miss a day or two). You should normally start to notice a difference in this timescale. Even if you're biting your nails less often, that's fine. Keep listening on a regular basis until your nail biting habit is just a distant memory.

If you're skeptical about hypnosis - and some people are, despite the success that it has - then there is another option to try.

Rather like hypnosis, this system works away to change your habits. It doesn't use any creams or other lotions. Instead it works on the biggest problem with nail biting - secretly, really deep down secretly, you actually enjoy biting your nails.

There, I told you the truth. Sorry!

If, deep down, you hated biting your fingernails you'd have found a way to stop.

I can't say too much more about this system here, but they claim it will take just 9 minutes for you to stop biting your nails forever. If you do decide to visit the site, they've got a weird "marketing trick". So don't click on the link to buy the product immediately. Instead, move your mouse off the web page (to the top of your browser, where all the buttons are, for instance). You'll get an annoying voice that says "wait" and - more importantly - the chance to get the product at half price but still with an 8 week money back guarantee.

One other way that some people find useful when they want to quit biting their nails is to use a simple rubber band.

Wear one round your wrist. Every time you catch yourself wanting to bite your nails, you snap the elastic band on the inside of your wrist. The "posh" term for this is "aversion therapy" - it's a kind of stimulus response. If you start to associate the mild pain of a snapping rubber band with biting your nails, the idea is that eventually you'll stop biting your nails because you'd prefer not to have the pain.

It's a cheap method and may well work for you!
