I'm a marketer, so this might sound odd coming from one of the dark side of selling, but...

Most people know living outside their means is a bad idea but no amount of advice seems to stop them from racking up the debts. Since getting rid of all my consumer debt (I'm not talking about my mortgage here), like an ex-smoker, I'm rabidly keen on telling you how you can do it too.

Why the chick? Because it's a free image I got from istockphoto - see I'm saving money even here!

Some Simple Starters

Your First Month

  1. Work out your budget. How much do you get each month? How much do you have to spend?
  2. For one month, keep a detailed money diary. It'll remind you of the £2 you spend on a coffee and all those 'hidden' purchases.
  3. Work out exactly how much you owe. My favourite rule, don't save before you get rid of all your debt.
  4. Stop buying stuff. I'm not kidding. Stop it. If you don't need it to live (food, water etc), you don't need it right now.

Alvin Hall

I love this man

This is the man who helped me get rid of my consumer debt. We had a programme in the UK in which he sorted out people's money issues - Your Money or Your Life.

Alvin talks sense, makes it fun and achievable.

Super tip Number 1 - the 30 Day Rule
This is a great idea. I found the site via LifeHacker and this is a personal finance blog called 'Get Rich Slowly'.
