The Shocking and Inhumane Treatment of Dogs in Modern Day China

The purpose of this lens is to document and highlight the current inhumane and abusive treatment of dogs in The Peoples Republic of China, with the hope that worldwide knowledge and attention will support and assist the Chinese people in securing adequate and necessary animal welfare protection.

Everyday, countless thousands of dogs (many former pets) are inhumanely caged, beaten, tortured, killed and butchered, often times publicly, to feed the Chinese demand for dog meat. This activity occurs, while simultaneously three quarters of the Chinese population have indicated a desire for improved animal welfare protections and an end to the dog meat industry. Pet ownership in China has also increased dramatically, in recent years.

Please note: I am not a member of any group, or political organization and I have no agenda, other than to do what I can in improving the welfare of dogs and animals. I especially feel strongly committed, to protecting and improving the welfare of companion animals, who are completely dependent on humans for their care and well-being. This is the path of personal, as well as social responsibility and what I as one person can do and contribute.

This has been a very difficult lens for me to build, because of the fact that I love dogs and I'm a lifelong pet owner. To actually witness the facts of their pain and suffering in modern day China is unsettling and disturbing, to say the least! Hopefully, it will prove beneficial in the long-run.

Dog Meat Industry in China

The Inhumane Facts of Dog Eating in China

*Dogs are often caged tightly and kept in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions until butchered.

*Dogs are purposely slaughtered in front of other dogs, to increase their fear and stress level- as this is supposed to enhance the flavor and increase the adrenaline in their meat, which according to Chinese folklore, boosts virility. Actual physical torture and bleeding them out slowly, are other routine methods used for this purpose.

*Dogs are frequently kept in cages outside of restaurants and markets until selected for slaughter, at which time, it is common for this to occur in public view, right on the street.

*Another dog being dragged away for slaughter. These animals are aware of what awaits them!

Who agrees with me, that this is an atrocity and completely Unacceptable!

Dog Meat Factories in China

*These dogs are being shipped to a meat processing plant for slaughter. Their suffering includes a two day truck ride without food or water.

*It has been documented recently that the overall demand for dog meat has been decreasing in China and that there are fewer dog farms now, due to the low dog meat prices. Unfortunately, this means that pets are being stolen by unscrupulous individuals, to fill the void and the demand by restaurants and others.

The Peoples Republic of China and Lack of Animal Cruelty and Welfare Laws

Why the Focus on China and the Chinese?

* Why is this lens highlighting dog cruelty in China, when dog and animal cruelty remains a problem and issue worldwide?

*The reason is very simply, that The Peoples Republic, which has become a modern, industrialized, technologically advanced nation and society, one that has significant commercial and trade interests with the U.S. and other world powers, still has no animal welfare or animal protection laws!

*This means that the vast majority of Chinese citizens, who favor elimination of dog butchery and animal cruelty, are unable to voice their concerns or take appropriate legal measures to end this barbaric and inhumane industry in their own country!

*A 2004 survey indicates that at least 75% of the Chinese people polled, favored an end to the dog meat trade and the adoption of animal welfare and cruelty laws, such as are almost standard and universal throughout the rest of the developed countries and civilized world!

Thank you so much for educating people on this site. It has to be done in order to get change.
This is truly disturbing. I shall have nightmares for weeks to come.
I'm so happy that people like yourself and special groups are banded together and have the strength to be the voice of these poor suffering animals.
This is barbaric behavior and anyone able to do this to these loving animals without any concious and still sleep at night, and those who can eat a dog are truly, truly evil (I'm vegetarian so let alone the traditional meats). Those of you shopping for winter coats in Canada, that made in Asia, beware, you might be wearing a dog or cat because we have no laws that require the manufacturer to disclose what type of fur it is.. If it looks unique, probably a dog or cat (someone's former pet that was stolen)
