None of my dogs are aggressive by nature but often at the park other dogs will start barking or growling at us. I think the main problem is improper or lack or socialization.

Aggressive dogs are the reason I can't take my Cockapoos to my town's boardwalk. And one of my dogs just loves to join in the staring, growling contest.

Oh... I hate that moment when the staring starts and the hackles go up! It pays to use massive distraction techniques at this point. We have a better understanding of each other after working on it together :)

Some good advice here. It's also good to deprive a dog of one of its senses. This is similar to when you talk about banging something or blowing a whistle. It confuses the dog. It's handy to throw a coat over one of the fighting dogs and that defuses the situation pretty quickly.
