Initially coming from the African motherland, the Basenji breed ranks fairly high in the popular culture as one of the most venerated dog breeds. It has been celebrated by different cultures for thousands of years. Basenjis could already be found on Egyptian pharaohs steles thousands years ago. One of the most puzzling features of Basenji lies in their quasi-inability to bark: the Basenji almost does not bark! Instead, it produces an unusual sound, due to its mysteriously shaped larynx. Some people do compare Basenji dogs to "cats with a dog attire" for not only their appearance, but also their temperament.
