1% of the US and the same for most of Europe means people we know have managed to stop stuttering Lets look at one you may know the face of...

As in his screen persona Xander Harris on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Nicholas Brendon lives in a world where demons are a normal part of adolescent life. Also I think he looks like that guy out of heroes too Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli), in Heroes, again they face demons ...

But off the set, Brendon knows that many of us have a host of real demons we ultimately must face,

The fear that beset Brendon at an early age was the onset of his uncontrollable stuttering. "I was seven or eight when it really became apparent. The more anxious and embarrassed I became, the worse it got," notes Brendon. "Of course, the snowball effect of fear and failure soon took over and soon my life became a living hell.whilst trying to stop stuttering"

Brendon remembers being afraid to talk in public, afraid to talk to strangers, and feeling ostracized by the rest of the world. "The truth is that people were generally nice to me, but that's not what I noticed," says Brendon. "I couldn't help feeling people thought I was a moron, and my self-imposed insecurity constantly bedeviled me."

Brendon regrets that his self-consciousness about his stuttering significantly interfered with his social life throughout high school and beyond. "Look, I know what it feels like to believe you're 'different' in a bad way. I didn't even get it together to date until I was 21 or 22,"

Tiger Woods Had To Stop Stuttering

Tiger wins at golf - and stuttering

Top-ranked golfer Tiger Woods tells CBS's 60 Minutes that it takes hard work and a competitive spirit to overcome childhood stuttering.

"The words got lost, you know, somewhere between the brain and the mouth. And it was very difficult, but I fought through it. I went to a school to try and get over that, and I just would work my tail off," Woods told the news program.

"The parallels between speech performance and sports performance are striking," said Jane Fraser, president of the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation "

Tiger Woods is the latest example of how the many hours of practice and hard work to win in sports are no different from those long hours spent in therapy for stuttering.

When words just don't come easily

Pam Mertz tried to stop stuttering but could not...

Mertz is standing in front of 24 sixth-graders at the Menands School, talking about stuttering. She stutters, and has since she was 5. After trying to hide it for four decades, she has decided at 46 not only to embrace her stuttering, but also to go public with it.

She has students stand up and stick their fingers inside Chinese finger traps. Naturally, their fingers get stuck in the little bamboo cylinders..."That's a little what it's like when a person who stutters gets stuck," Mertz says.

She has them try to hide a grapefruit in their clothes. Kabu Kalinda hides it in the hood of her shirt, Keyshawn Gomes under his shirt in back... "That's kind of how I felt when I was in school," Mertz says. "Even when I was trying to hide my stuttering, it still stuck out."

After a while she decided that controlling her breathing, substituting words and all that thinking ahead was just too exhausting. It's OK that she stutters....

If you feel like laughing at her, imagine first how you would cope with this speech impediment that influences your daily life.

I must admit her speech may sound quite unlikely to you if you have never heard a severe stutterer talking. The stuttering has nothing to do with her intelligence or the way she thinks. It's a neurological condition that makes people stutter.

Although I am a moderate stutterer who has times when he speaks absolutely fluent I have still problems dealing with my impediment. I think the most disturbing thing stutterers have to face with are all the people who think of you as a mentally retarded person and turn away from you because of that.

Many people do this because they don't know how to react when their conversational partner starts stuttering. My advice is that you should tell them that you don't mind their stuttering. Usually this releases their tension and their speech becomes more fluent.

It's a pretty frustrating issue and most stutterers have to deal with it for their whole lives. The most difficult challenges stutterers have to take up:
1. Introducing themselves
2. Giving oral presentations
3. Talking on the phone
4. Meeting new people
5. Getting a decent job The most important point is that stuttering is usually not the only problem in their lives.

Are Adults Able to Stop Stuttering?
Adults who develop stuttering or stammering at an early age but weren't able to get the necessary therapy to properly treat their condition are the ones who often face the challenge of learning to accept their stammering without any feelings of insecurity or inferiority. While it greatly relieves an adult's emotions when one accepts his or her stuttering condition, there is no harm in searching for a possible cure.

I'd love to hear your feedback and views on stop stuttering

Finding the genes involved in stuttering and understanding what they do in people who stutter and in those who are normally fluent holds the promise of revealing some of the underlying causes of stuttering.

From this, researchers hope to be able to develop better therapies for those who stutter.

This is a very informative lens. I'd like to add, as someone pretty familiar with this condition, is that people who stutter also have other speech problems as well. Stammering is the most visible and pronounced symptom of dis-fluency, but there are other problems that go along with it, such as word-retrieval difficulty or problems forming sentences.

Also, many of individuals with this condition have had to endure years of ridicule and psychological abuse by their peers while growing up.Over time, they develop other conditions such as social phobia and depression.

As someone here already posted, emotional support is extremely important. I hope that some day there will be a cure for this condition.

My training is as a speech-language pathologist and I worked with a few students who had fluency problems when I was in training. It is a very challenging condition. I can imagine the social stigma that is associated with this when it is severe. It's not like you can just stop talking! This is great information and hopefully it will help others gain a better understanding of it.

As a person who stutters, I find that emotional support is just as important as therapy for our stuttering (if not more important). To meet other people who stutter who can relate to our lives as people who stutter helps us accept our stuttering more than anything else. For 33 years The National Stuttering Association (NSA) has been doing just that. The NSA is the largest self-help non-profit organization for people who stutter in the country. They offer several programs which provides the opportunity for people who stutter to meet and interact with other people who stutter at local chapter meetings, workshops and annual conferences in which over 600 people who stutter (including kids and teens) attend each year! Conferences in recent years have included such keynote speakers as VP Joe Biden, Arthur Blank (Owner, Atlanta Falcons and founder of Home Depot), Bob Love (Chicago Bulls), Annie Glenn, John Melendez and John Stossel. They all shared truly amazing stories.
