Stop Stuttering and Gain Control of Your Life!

If you are part of the 1% of the population that stutters, you know how stuttering and the desire to stop stuttering affect every aspect of your life. Stuttering, also known as stammering, is not connected with intelligence in any way whatsoever. What do Winston Churchill, James Earl Jones, Marilyn Monroe, Thomas Edison, King George the VI, Albert Einstein, and Terry McElhinney all have in common? They all suffered from stuttering, and all learned to recover from stuttering so they could become successful individuals despite their stutter. They all learned that to be successful, they needed to first learn to control their stuttering!

Terry's Story

Terry McElhenney receiving a kick box training awardTerry McElhinney suffered from stuttering throughout his childhood. Kids would tease him, adults assumed he wasn't smart enough, and most lacked the patience and good nature Terry needed to communicate more effectively. At age 16, Terry decided to look for answers as to why he stuttered. Terry didn't get the answer he was looking for. Instead, he learned so much more. He discovered finding out WHY he stuttered wasn't nearly as important as figuring out HOW to stop stuttering so he could become successful in whatever direction he chose to take his life. Now that Terry has succeeded in learning to control is stuttering and take charge of his life, he has dedicated his life to help others stop their stuttering! He has written a book called Are You Ready to Take Control of Your Stammer and Your Life? It is a wonderful resource to use if you are trying to learn how to stop stuttering.

Create New Habits

Terry's biggest realization was that the body and the mind are intertwined, and that one affects the other. Repetition causes all of us, whether we stutter or not, to make new neurological patterns in our brain, essentially "rewiring" out brain. Think about driving or commuting to work. The first time you traveled to your job, especially if you relocated, you may have consulted directions or a map. But after a while, the route became second nature. Have you ever driven to or from work, and after arriving, you realized you were daydreaming and you didn't even remember the drive itself? You were basically on auto-pilot! The repeated routine of traveling the same route became a habit, which formed new neurological pathways in your brain. This same rewiring is how Terry learned to stop stuttering. Now instead of stuttering controlling Terry, he controls his stuttering and leads an extremely successful life, speaking to large groups of people on a daily basis, all with confidence, not worrying how stuttering will affect his success. Terry now teaches stutters how to stop stuttering, in addition to owning and operating a successful kick box training center!

Train Your Mind

Terry realized that negative thinking leads to negative results. When interacting with positive, calm, gentle people, Terry could stop stuttering compared to when he felt negative emotions - anger, aggression, doubt, and fear. These emotions increased his stuttering. He trained himself to control his thought process, alter his body language, and focus on what to do "right." This allowed him to stop stuttering. Instead of asking himself, "Why am I so stupid, why is life so cruel to me", he focuses on, "What can I do differently and what body language do I want to use to feel confident, showing the world I am in control?"
