What is your Lego storage solution?

I too love legos and i have found a very nice solution, the lego storage brick. It is a box in the shape of a big lego brick and the best part is that you can stack them like a regular lego brick

I usually put all my loose Lego pieces in some plastic multi-drawer units and the complete built Lego sets on some wooden shelves.

    Good informative lens!

Our daughter loves Legos, so she has a system unique to her. Thanks for so many good ideas! ;-)

    fab ideas!

My son likes to keep the sets separate, so we get a plastic container for each. I like the look of the project chest and storae system. It's compact and could be stored in any corner. Nice lens.

I just to have all my legos in one big box, but your idea is much better.

We have an entire room consumed by legos. Thanks for the great ideas
  • veryirie Dec 28, 2011 @ 12:38 am | delete
Decades ago I made a giant drawstring sack....the kids did a pretty good job of putting them away, but of course, we still stepped on a few Legos now and then. OWWWW!
  • baby-strollers Dec 7, 2011 @ 9:59 am | delete
There is so much lego all over our basement floor. I think the Qube cart XL is the way for us.

Great ideas, I will definitely keep them in mind when my 4 year old starts using Legos.

This system is ideal for storing the average family household Lego collection.
  • JoyfulPamela Aug 12, 2011 @ 9:14 am | delete
We have tried several 'solutions', but now the boys keep their pieces in those bins that fit under the bed. Wonderful ideas, Bev!

My son's lego is everywhere in the house and possibly this will help to organize his lego.
  • ---Chazz Aug 1, 2011 @ 10:39 pm | delete
We used the underbed storage box -- actually two of them. My son is all grown up now and married, but the boxes of legos are still in my attic...

I'm a former kindergarten teacher and now have 4 grandsons, so I LOVED this lens! Really clever ideas for lego storage. Anything to keep them off the carpet (they hurt so much when you step on one in bare feet!) :)

great idea. i hope i had 1 in my house :)
  • jamesnodturft May 12, 2011 @ 10:25 am | delete
These are great ideas. We used fishing tackle boxes for the very small pieces, like hinges and so on.

Great storage items, some of which I've never seen or heard of. My boys would have loved them. We used an assortment of different sized Rubbermaid bins. Now I'm looking for an easy way to separate years of Lego from a couple years of Megabloks...

I've "liked" your lens. great ideas!
  • JackBandit Mar 28, 2011 @ 12:14 pm | delete
Wonderful solutions for Lego storage... but these tips are universally helpful for all sorts of items! I use a similar rolling shelf with plastic "cubby" cabinets in my garage. I keep all my tools and hardware in it! :)

unfortunately our lego sets get all mixed together

but fortunately my son is creative and makes his own things

I use storage bins to store the parts in his closet

I'm the organizer in our family and am all for neat storage solutions. Thanks for assembling so many great ideas. We have at least 50 stackable Rubbermaid storage bins to keep our various projects organized. Squid Angel Blessed.

Ah - also, please accept my blessing!
  • dannystaple Feb 16, 2011 @ 5:15 pm | delete
I use moulded tackle or tool trays for the technic parts and small parts - so they can be sorted by type. I use ziplock baggies for the tiny ones, and then larger collapsible buckets for the bigger parts. I have a big tub o' bricks that I use for parts that are neither large or specialist - ie all the 2x2 and 2x4 basic Lego bricks. This makes it kind of easy to find what I want, although I do wander if excessive sorting limits my accidental discoveries (I still make them)..

This is an important lens to highlight a kids pride and joy. Not all parents, however, can afford expensive storage. Featured this on Kids Toys

I'm glad you wrote about Legos! I have always loved Legos! I still do... I have a few pieces near my computer back home (I'm south for the winter) - and when I need to ponder something to write about, or think about, I'll take out the Legos and "doodle" with them - you know, just make random "buildings" with them.

But I digress... Had another idea for Lego storage! Why not make a box OUT of Legos? Then the box and the Legos would be one & the same. Just a thought. :)
    Great lens!
    Hugs,
    Kath

I know what it is like to stand on a piece of Lego in bare feet, so I was always trying to find ways to store it tidily, and yet still make it easily accessible for my kids. Some of your ideas for storage for lego are exactly what I needed back then.....Great lens, full of great options and ideas. *SquidAngel Blessed*

Whew! Very helpful Lens. i try to stay away from buying my son too many lego's because we just don't know where to store them neatly! Liked!
  • kevinw1 Nov 21, 2010 @ 9:54 pm | delete
I have a LOT of LEGO . I keep small parts by type in fishing tackle boxes (like Planos), special-purpose larger parts in LEGO bins - the kind that brick selections come in - and bricks, by color and size, in cardboard "lingerie drawer" stacks! Oh, and plates (by color and size) in aluminum loaf pans. It's not hard to re-purpose containers around the house, even if you have a lot of LEGO to store, rather than buying special-purpose storage.
  • my_never_bored_hands Nov 16, 2010 @ 9:41 am | delete
Well done lens. Thumbs up! Great solutions for storing all those lego pieces...only a problem in our case we don't have a space where we can put this storage :( I think we can replace our current storage boxes for a transparent ones, it might bring some positive changes, I hope :)
  • rwoman Nov 3, 2010 @ 7:45 pm | delete
Oh dear, I don't have a solution just a big problem. My son has many legos and we have plenty of storage for the bricks etc. The problem is that he doesn't like to break down his creations and wants to leave them intact for future play. That is a lot of robots, vehicles, forts, ships, etc. Our current solution is a large shallow cardboard box (I think a jacket shipped in it) that can slide under the bed. At least we can put it away when company comes.

Great storage for anything! My girls don't play with lego, but everything else is overflowing! Will try this.

Great storage devices for one of the best toys in the world. I'll have to feature this lens on my Lego lenses. Nice work on a clean lens.
  • nukemdomis Sep 15, 2010 @ 8:41 am | delete
Those are perfect storage devices for a Lego collection. I still would get everything mixed up even if I had these though.
  • SquidooKimberly Sep 8, 2010 @ 1:44 pm | delete
This just makes me want some Legos!
  • resabi Aug 20, 2010 @ 5:11 pm | delete
Teeny tiny lego bricks always remind me of the endless teeny tiny Barbie shoes that were scattered around my house. Invariably, one of a pair would be lost immediately. I'd finally decide to throw away the stray shoe and then I'd step on the previously lost one. Impossible to keep a pair. F.A.O. Schwartz had a wonderful idea for the Barbie shoes: They had a huge (maybe 12 feet tall) cylindrical acrylic tube filled with bubbling water and little shoes. I wouldn't recommend that for the lego bricks, though... Found a t-shirt the other day that has a lego base inset into the chest so you can build wherever you are. I'd like to be on the team with those uniforms.

Why didn't you make this page for Lego storage... 10 years ago??? I wouldn't have had headache trying to find a way to store the thousands legos my son had :( I love that tray cabinet and also the case chest and wouldn't have think to get transparent cases!
  • hayleylou Jul 13, 2010 @ 7:46 pm | delete
Fab ideas, my 2 boys are becoming lego addicts and I think this will be something that I am goig to have to look at soon, thumbs up :)
  • Joan4 Jul 13, 2010 @ 1:39 pm | delete
Great ideas for storing those legos! I sure have stepped on more than my share!
  • aj2008 Jul 13, 2010 @ 6:10 am | delete
Oh wow - storing lego is a problem that this lego mad family has, especially as my two youngest inherited all their big brother's lego - am proud to say we have a special lego folder to store all the instructions, dating back to lego bought nearly 30 years ago!!

These lego storage solutions are brilliant!

BTW Thanks for the blessing on my bullying lens :)
  • Classicvideogamesplus May 13, 2010 @ 4:47 pm | delete
Got a chuckle from this lens but informative. We have a few clear plastic bins to put legos in. After they are done and pick them up, 3 younger boys, I can usually find a few stragglers either by stepping on them or when using the vacuum. What child doesn't love Lego's?
  • HannahDavis Mar 4, 2010 @ 7:23 am | delete
What a helpful lens. My son's legos aren't quite to the emergency status, but he's still young. So I'll definitely need this info in the future!
  • azpoppy Jan 27, 2010 @ 1:01 pm | delete
The floor? The bottoms of my feet? Seriously, we use a large clear plastic lidded bin and he rustles through endlessly. Rattle, rattle, rattle. My 11 year old is mostly obsessed with the Star Wars models and once he builds them, doesn't take them apart so I have a lovely display of spacecraft in my living room. *sigh* I do love his interest in building though and lately, he has been branching out and building other things.

Great! I really like the ones on wheels that have the clear boxes, so you can see what you have and roll them away for storage. Thanks!
