Ranked #50,139 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #935,529 overall

So you want to build a storage shed?

So you have finally figured out that you have run out of room to put all of your stuff. Well, you have a few options. The first option would be to rent out a storage unit, paying upwards of $40 per month, and having to drive out whatever you need anything. A second option, a cheaper one, would be to build a storage shed in your backyard. This is the option that I chose, and have a few tips for you.

What type of shed do you need?

Before you can begin building any type of storage shed, you're going to need to figure out what type of shed you are looking for. There are various types of sheds, and you need to find the one that is right for you. Do you want a tall shed, a wide shed, or a shed with large doors? One way to figure out what type of shed you need is to find out what you need to put into it. If you're looking to store a lawn mower, you may want a shed with wider doors. So go ahead and think about exactly what you're going to use it for.

Get a group of plans!

After you've decided what type of shed you need, you're going to want to go and look for some shed plans. Every storage shed plan is different, and it can take some time to find the right one for you. I made the mistake of going to a local hardware store in purchasing a single plan. Once I got home, it was nothing like what I wanted, and had to return it. I would recommend finding a group of plans, so that you have many options to pick and choose from.

Do you need to file permits?

Once you find the right shed that you want to build, you're going to have to see if you need to file any permits with the city that you reside in. don't let the steer you away from building your own shed, as it is a very easy process, and not necessary in many cities. There are only a few number of cities that require you to file paperwork for this type of construction. I've included a great resource at the end of this article, so you can see how to check if you need to file a permit.

Where to get plans, and what to look for!

As I've mentioned before, I highly recommend finding a group of plans versus a single plan. I was able to find a set of 12,000 plans on the Internet. It took me a little while to find the right one, but it was absolutely perfect. I noticed that the author was offering a free shed plan, so I've also linked to this below. I highly encourage that you download this, and see the quality of his plans. Your going to want to make sure that you get plans with plenty of pictures, diagrams, and one with a parts list. I purchased my 12,000 storage shed plans from here.

The plan is available near the middle of the site, but i do recommend that you read through the site. It has a good questionnaire at the beginning that was helpful for me. It also shows some examples of quality plans.
