You will also want to look into power supplies. Some external hard drives require external power supplies while others pull from your computer when you plug in. Size of the actual drive is also a good thing to consider. In these days, 250 GB doesn't take up too much space.

Business backup data storage is a different story. You won't see a ton of differences in the same areas you will with personal external hard drives. The important thing to remember is that there are various types of storage you will want to look into for your business. The main types are networked, direct attached, disk storage, and tape backup.

Networked Storage

Networked Storage provides a central location for file sharing and other similar uses. Consider this if you are mainly looking to share a lot of data and don't have lot of room to work with.

Direct Attached

This type of storage is like an over sized personal external hard drive. They would typically attach directly to a serve to increase the capacity of data.

Disk Storage

Consider Disk storage if you are needing removable and transportable storage.

Tape

Tape storage is common for long term use and storage. Tape is a lot slower to access, but is perfect for simply maintaining a safe, secure copy of all of your data.

Although it may seem confusing and overwhelming at times, data storage really isn't complicated. Evaluate your needs and consider the things that have been expressed here, and you will make the correct data storage decision.

A few years ago we used to keep all of our files in filing cabinets. But as we got more and more files that became harder and harder to do. In addition, we realized it was not very secure. So we made our files digital and have been storing them that way, but it slows down our server, servers that are off site become the best way for us to go. It helped speed up things in our office and provide for a secure location for our data. Now we are looking for ways to defrag our files to make everything run even smoother.
