Pigs as Characters in Stories

We humans have a complicated relationship with pigs. Pigs are one of the more intelligent of our mammal counterparts, yet pigs have been important as a human food source for centuries. Pigs grow quickly, they taste good, and they are easy to raise because they will eat almost anything.

On the other hand, pigs remind us of ourselves in many ways. When one person calls another a "pig," he is not usually being complimentary. Does this have something to do with the fact that pigs are rather large with small eyes, are greedy about food, and keep their noses in the mud?

Yet somehow, we are charmed by pigs as book characters, as well. They are somehow comical and without guile. They are who they are and are usually good-hearted and friendly.

This lens will look at how pigs are portrayed as characters and showcase some of the books that introduce us to these jocular, simple personalities. Maybe they will remind you of someone you know.

You will also find some puppets and other gift items for the pig lover in your life.

Three Little Sleeping Pigs

What Cute Little Pigs!

The Old Classic "The Three Little Pigs" in Its Many Interpretations

Check Out Some of These Cool Books and Vote for Your Favorite Version!

The Three Little Pigs go out to seek their fortune and each builds his house out of different materials: straw, sticks, and bricks. The big, bad wolf comes along, and we all know what happens next.

Several authors of children's books have taken this basic story and elaborated on it. Some versions are rather straightforward. Others turn things on their heads. Children have a lot of fun seeing events turned around in this way. Make sure, however, that your child knows the authentic version before playing around with the ideas. The original story has been told for centuries to inoculate children against some of the dangers of the world. There are some good lessons to be learned about being prepared and about thinking ahead and being real about the dangers. On the other hand, some of the spoofs teach us how to see things from a different perspective.

Have you read any of these versions? If so, please vote for your favorite!

Say Hello to All Us Piggies.

Describe What Your House Is Made Of

I actually live in a log house. We have a pair of coyotes who live in our backyard on and off. I hear them howling and I see them pouncing on the mice that scurry under the snow in the winter. We are waiting to see if they have a litter this spring. (It is June now, but we haven't seen or heard the pups. Maybe they are hidden away deeper in the woods.)

I have a friend who has built a straw bale house. It's actually quite beautiful, and contrary to popular pig belief, remarkably strong.

What kind of house do you live in? Are there any wolves in your neighborhood? How about other canines? Any pigs?

Pigs Are Not Just Characters in Fairy Tales

Do You Know These Pig Books?

Stories that include pigs as main characters come across as particularly charming. There's something about the personal traits that pigs represent that cut through pretensions. If we do meet a pretentious pig -- Jim Hensen's Miss Piggy comes to mind -- we cannot help but laugh because the way pigs look tickle our funny bones while warming our hearts.

The next part of this lens will look at some of these pig characters from children's books. Maybe we can learn something about ourselves by getting to know some of these well known pigs.

Charlotte's Web

by E.B. White

Newbery-winning story Charlotte's Web is a classic beloved by adults as well as children. It is one of those memorable stories that a person can reread again and again, always finding something new.

The pig character is Wilbur, a cheerful little pig whom Charlotte the spider befriends and saves from a nasty fate as the farmer's dinner. Themes of friendship, life and death are explored in a hopeful way, but be prepared with a box of kleenex for the ending.

Babe

by Dick King-Smith

Who can forget this amazing little pig who, wanting to be useful and to avoid being seen as only pork chops and a ham, learns the skills of the farmer's sheep dog with the participation of the sheep who prefer his funny little ways to what they consider the vicious ways of the "wolf," or border shepherd. Babe gets to participate in the sheep dog competitions and amazes everyone.

by Mary Stolz

Another tale of a clever pig's solution when finding out he's to be barbecued! This pig runs away and pretends to be a boy. He's remarkably successful at it -- for a while!

A Day No Pigs Would Die

by Robert Newton Peck

This story is more a tale about the relationship between father and son than about a pig, per se. A Shaker from Vermont, the father makes his living slaughtering pigs. The story is rich with humanity with moments of humor and pathos intermingled within a boy's coming of age. Heart-breakingly tender.
