Tornado Season 2009

My family loves the weather. It doesn't matter whether it's thunderstorms, snow storms or watching The Wizard of OZ.

My husband Curt, has always dreamed of being a Storm Chaser. Storm chasers are committed to learning as much as possible about the workings of a tornado. 'Night of The Twisters' is an incredible movie that dramatizes the power of a tornado.

Super cells that spawn tornadoes pack torrential rain, extreme lightning, giant hail and destructive winds. By all means be alert to watches and warnings in your area. Safety is your prime concern.

Ridin'the storm out,

Kelly Wissink

Tornado on Wikipedia

A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds between 40 mph (64 km/h) and 110 mph (177 km/h), are approximately 250 feet (75 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. Some attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than a mile (1.6 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km).

Although tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctica, most occur in the United States. They also commonly occur in southern Canada, south-central and eastern Asia, east-central South America, Southern Africa, northwestern and southeast Europe, western and southeastern Australia, and New Zealand.

Tornado Preparedness: The Six Keys to Funnel Safety

Tornado Preparedness-We'll use the acronym S.T.O.R.M.S.
The US has more tornadoes than any other area on the globe. We get them in the spring, as weather changes in the fall, when summer storms hit, and as byproducts of hurricanes. Though the Midwest is known as "tornado alley," there's really no place in the country that's immune. Add to this the fact that hurricanes and severe thunderstorms can produce directional winds nearly as destructive as the vortex of a twister, and it's easy to see that we need additional preparedness info beyond "duck and cover."

NOAA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IMPROVES TORNADO RATING SYSTEM

NOAA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IMPROVES TORNADO RATING SYSTEM
The F Scale was developed in 1971 by T. Theodore Fujita to rate tornadoes and estimate associated wind speed based on the damage they cause. The EF Scale refines and improves the original scale. It was developed by the Texas Tech University Wind Science and Engineering Research Center, along with a forum of wind engineers, universities, private companies, government organizations, private sector meteorologists and NOAA meteorologists from across the country.
