Stornoway and Pendleton SC Became Sister Cities in 2002

My husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to join friends in being part of the 36 member Pendleton Delegation to go to Stornoway Scotland for the official signing of the twinning charter.

On March 15, 2002 we joined the delegation of 36 Pendletonians to travel to Pendleton's Sister City in the Western Isles of Scotland. We boarded the bus at Pendleton Town Hall where we were given a Goodie Bag decorated with red, white and blue ribbon. As we pulled out of the parking lot, we were surprised to realize that the Police Cars and Fire Truck were there to escort us out of town. With sirens going, we made two laps around the Village Green waving goodbye to merchants, shoppers and friends who were waiving American Flags. We headed to the Atlanta Airport and this began a journey that we will never forget.

I put together a scrap book and would like to share it with you on this scroll down web page called a Squidoo Lens. Please continue to scroll and let me tell you about this wonderful trip. I sure appreciate your visiting and hope you enjoy it. You will need to give this page time to completely load because there are a lot of pictures. Thank you.

The Thistle design was made using a stamp by Hero Arts which I purchased at The Mercantile in Pendleton. I used watercolor markers to color the design after it was stamped. I used this as the theme throughout my scrapbook and scanned the page to use on this lens.

What is a Sister City?

Wikipedia has the answer

What Does Being A Sister City Mean To Pendleton

Thank you Amber Barnes for this information

Building on a successful school partnership between Pendleton High School and the Nicholson Institutes in the Western Isles, the Town of Pendleton and Stornoway, Scotland expressed their willingness and desire, through their respective Councils, to twin and become sister cities. The partnership began with the signing of the official documents between the governments of the two communities.

April 5, 2001, the Mayor of Pendleton, Carol Burdette, and the Convener of the Western Isles of Scotland, Alex McDonald, formally declared the twinning by signing the official documents. The ceremony was held on the Village Green in Pendleton.

March 21, 2002, Convener MacDonald and Mayor Burdette signed the official documents at a ceremony held in Stornoway, Scotland.

The leaders of both communities entered into the relationship with the hopes of sharing ideas and the exchange of citizens while fostering a greater friendship and understanding between the United States and the United Kingdom.

It is the ultimate goal of this partnership to deepen friendship and mutual understanding through educational, cultural, industrial and economic exchanges.

Back To Our Trip To Stornoway Scotland

We had a 6 hr 35 minute flight to Glasgow via Newark, N.J.

From Glasgow we took a bus to Edinburgh where we toured and shopped for 3 days before taking a 4 hour eventful ferry ride to Stornoway in the Western Isles of Scotland.

In Edinburgh we stayed at the Ibis Motel and hung out at Garfunkels. On Sunday we went the morning church service at St. Giles Cathedral. After the service, we enjoyed a most interesting tour of the church.

St. Giles Cathedral dates back to 1243 and is one of the oldest buildings in Edinburgh. It is said to have been founded by Alexaander I. The church was practically destroyed by Richard II of England. It is also famous for it's connection with John Knox as he was the first Protestant minister at St. Giles.

Inside St. Giles, the Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer in 1911 to house the Knights of the Thistle which is the most ancient and most Noble Order of the Thistle - the highest order of chivalry in Scotland.

Next Stop - Ullapool, Scotland

We boarded the ferry to Stornoway

Little did we know what lay ahead................a long, miserable 4 hr Ferry Ride on rough waters. Many got sick and if my hubby had taken along his Doctor's Bag we probably could have paid for our trip.

When we arrived in Stornoway all our troubles faded away as we were met by Dignitaries, a Bag Piper, and our Host Families. It was a very warm welcome and typical for the Scottish hospitality that we enjoyed over the next several days.

We stayed at Fernlea, a Bed & Breakfast owned my Maureen Macmillan. We became good friends and they visited us the next fall in Pendleton. They enjoyed seeing the sights in South Carolina and especially enjoyed going to a Clemson Football Game.

Touring Stornoway Scotland

Stornoway offered much for us to see and do.

We visited the Stornoway Castle. James Matheson made his fortune in the British opium trade of the 1830's and spent much of his drug money on shipping soil and plants to Lewis to create the proper setting for his castle. He also spent a great deal of his money helping the island's inhabitants through the famines of the 19th century. It had one more owner- Lord Leverhulme - before being given to the people of Stornoway. It was used as a Naval Hospital and then became the home of Lewis Castle College.

Note: This is information that I had written in my scrapbook and I believe it came from a tourist brochure.

Pendleton SC is 4 miles from Clemson University and it is tradition for traveling Clemson fans to have their pictures holding their Tiger Rag. Here we are with friends holding our Tiger Rags in front of the castle. The picture was later in an edition of the Orange and White Newspaper

Gearrannan Black House Village

We met a man who was still living in a blackhouse

The typical Gearrannan Black House was a long, rectangular building 40 - 50 feet in length, with an interior width of 10 to 12 feet. All the corners in the outside walls were rounded, and great care was taken to insure that the outer walls which were of undressed stone, had a slight slant to allow the rain to drip off and not seep into the interior. The thatched roof was a fundamental characteristic of the black house.

Of course, here we are again with our Tiger Rags! Do I look cold? I was freezing and stayed cold the whole time we were in Scotland but then that is not too unusual for me.

Note: This information also came from a Tourist flyer.

A Visit to Harris Tweed Mill

Very interesting tour which included lunch in Rodel Hotel

All of us wanted to get a Harris Tweed jacket or cap and it was so interesting to see how it was actually made.

We got a Harris Tweed cap for my hubby and our son. We wanted to get our daughter a scarf but could not find one like we were looking for.

Harris Tweed has been around for a long time and I hope it stays.

St. Clements Church

at Rodel on the Isle of Harris

St. Clements Church was built in the late 15th century for the Chiefs of the the MacLeods of Harris. The 8th chief prepared a tomb for himself which is said to be the finest medaeval wall tomb in Scotland.

One of the delegates who also serves on Pendleton Town Council, Sandra Gantt, really stirred emotion when she began singing Amazing Grace.

We did not have a video camera the day we were at St. Clements Church

The Callanish Stones

Isle of Lewis

I could have stayed all day studying the Callanish Stones. I found them fascinating. According to the tour brochure, these stones date back over 4,000 years. The Callanish Stones rank second in terms of importance only to Stonehenge. Callanish was thought to record movements of the moon whereas Stonehenge records movements of the sun.

The Official Twinning Ceremony

Seulachadh Foirmeil

We had performed the first part of the Twinning the previous year on the Village Green in Pendleton South Carolina. Now we were ready to complete the ceremony in Stornoway so that we will forever be Sister Cities.

The program for the Twinning Ceremony between Pendleton SC and Stornoway Scotland

Led by The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar

The ceremony was held at the Stornoway Town Hall on Friday, March 22, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. and was followed by a delicious buffet at the Lews Castle College. We felt very special being a part of this historic event.

Meet Betty Martin, my Email Buddy

Betty lives in Stornoway

Betty moved to Stornoway and noticed the Sister City sign. She got on the Internet to try to find out something about Stornoway's Sister City, Pendleton SC and came across my Pendleton Old Photos lens and left a nice comment. We began to email and she has been so kind to share some of her great photos with us.

This is a recent note from Betty:

Thanks Nancy for sending this link, what great comments about Scotland & Stornoway in particular. I am married to a Stornoway man and visited on holiday most years over the last 45 years and never dreamed I would actually live here, however, last year we packed up and moved here and I just love it. A totally different way of life to that we had on the mainland and better in every way. So glad we did it. If anyone would like more photo's of the place please get in touch. regards to all from Stornoway.
