The Story Pirates

Founded in 2003 the Pirates' programs have grown to reach tens of thousands of children each year. By focusing on the power of communication and self-expression, SVSP gives children the tools to become confident, literate students, and encourages kids to become more thoughtful and passionate writers and speakers- in and out of school.

The cornerstone of our company is the Play/Write Program, a series of creative writing and drama workshops that lead to a sketch comedy show acted by adults and comprised entirely of stories written by kids. Described as "Monty Python meets Schoolhouse Rock," our award winning musical sketch comedy show performs each Saturday at 2pm at the Drama Book Shop in midtown Manhattan.

Book our personalized birthday parties where your child's story is always the featured sketch. We take care of the cake, the party favors and every other detail you can imagine.

Bring us to your school or community based organization; each year we visit dozens of schools all over the Tri-State area and beyond with our shows and workshops - teaching kids a love of writing and the arts without the kids ever suspecting they are learning.

Mission Statement:

The Striking Viking Story Pirates (SVSP) is a not-for-profit organization founded to promote creative collaboration between adults and children by providing a wide variety of original arts and literacy programs. We believe that such collaboration:

1. improves the relevancy and effectiveness of classroom and extracurricular learning.
2. creates confident children who carry their ability to express themselves into adulthood.
3. builds strong communities that celebrate the value of young voices from diverse backgrounds.

2. be customized to fit the needs of individuals and communities.

Each year The Story Pirates visit dozens of elementary schools and other educational institutions with our tailor made shows and hands-on workshops.

Our unique approach teaches kids a love of literacy and the arts without the kids ever knowing they're learning.

We receive requests from principals, teachers, parents, PTA members and kids to bring our programs to schools all over the country. Please request your dates early, as our school-year schedule tends to become booked very quickly.

The Story Pirates have regular family shows in New York City and Los Angeles!

The Story Pirates take care of every detail as we create a personalized birthday experience that your child and guests will never forget: We perform our signature sketch comedy musical featuring adaptations of stories written by kids from all over the country.

PLUS, we add a new story written by YOUR CHILD! (and invite birthday author onstage a for a special interview!)

VOLUNTEERS with the Story Pirates have an opportunity to be a part of an exciting show. For the most part, volunteers help out with our weekly Saturday shows at the Drama Book Shop. We also welcome extra hands for our morning school tours and after-school programs in schools around the city.

Volunteers come on a regular or week-to-week basis.

We also offer INTERNSHIPS for college and graduate students, as well as short-term internships and community service hours for high school students.

Interns volunteer with the show and work on independent projects during the week, helping the Story Pirates grow to reach more schools around the city. Hours are flexible, and specific duties depend on the intern's area of interest.
