What I'd take with me ....

Welcome to the Stranded Lens, part of the Stranded Group!  It's always hard to pin down one book, one CD, one movie and one thing to eat.  And even deciding on one single place to be stranded is hard.

But this is all in fun. Here are some of my choices, and some of Kate's too.

Check out these ideas ... and then why don't you make your own Stranded Lens and join the group!

Where Kate would like to be stranded ...

Ahh, Paris, the city of lights

I have been to Paris once, for a grand total of 27 hours. I was in and out for a business meeting, but managed to squeeze in a trip to the top of La Tour Eiffel at night, sampling crepes from a crepe cart, mass at Notre Dame, bumming around Montmartre, two delicious gourmet dinners, climbing the Arc de Triomphe, dancing at a night club and shopping in an organic street market.

I would love to be stranded in Paris!

The book Kate would take...

Robertson Davies' "The Cornish Trilogy"

OK, this might be a bit of a cheat. Robertson Davies was an amazing Canadian writer. He books are filled with lively description, witty dialogue and an incredible sense of what it means to be Canadian. He could tell a really intricate story but make it a really enjoyable read. This is a collection of my three favourite books of his (all bound in one volume!).

The Cornish Trilogy

From a reviewer ...

"Stories as intriguing as this do not often appear. You will travel between a thinly veiled Toronto and war-torn Europe, through generations of a family and across decades of time. A master storyteller, you will need to pay close attention (perhaps create a family tree) to understand how everyone fits together. The literary allusions could have you researching for months, and pepper the pages with just enough spice to add creedence to the education levels of the characters.

The main thread that ties all three books together is the main character, Reverend Simon Darcourt, who is on a quest to write the biography of a philanthropist with whom he was acquainted. To say that this is the entire story would be a gross understatement. The plot leaves few stones unturned in the lives of its characters, who three-dimensionally number in the dozens. "

The Movie Kate Could Watch Over and Over and Over ...

Babette's Feast

I love this movie. Everytime I watch it, I weep, I gain new insights into the characters and I learn a little bit more French and Dutch. It is such a beautiful tale of passion ... passion for God, passion for one's family, passion for one's vocation ... and sacrifice. And has an incredible meal prepared during it - you can watch it just for that alone.

Babette's Feast

Plot synopsis from Amazon ...

"In 19th century Denmark, two adult sisters live in an isolated village with their father, who is the honored pastor of a small Protestant church that is almost a sect unto itself. Although they each are presented with a real opportunity to leave the village, the sisters choose to stay with their father, to serve to him and their church. After some years, a French woman refugee, Babette, arrives at their door, begs them to take her in, and commits herself to work for them as maid/housekeeper/cook. Sometime after their father dies, the sisters decide to hold a dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Babette experiences unexpected good fortune and implores the sisters to allow her to take charge of the preparation of the meal. Although they are secretly concerned about what Babette, a Catholic and a foreigner, might do, the sisters allow her to go ahead. Babette then prepares the feast of a lifetime for the members of the tiny church and an important gentleman related to one of them."

What Kate would have for dinner *every* night ...

Being from Texas, I can always eat fajitas!

I LOVE Fajitas, especially when they have all the trimmings. This is a recipe from the Food Network.

Fajitas

Marinade:
1 orange, juiced
2 limes, juiced
3 tablespoons canola oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon salt

2 1/4 pounds skirt or flank steak, trimmed of fat
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 red onion, thinly sliced
Guacamole
Salsa
12 flour tortillas, warm

In a small bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. Place steak in a shallow container, and pour marinade over it. Refrigerate, covered, 8 hours or overnight to tenderize meat.

Drain the marinade from the meat. Grill the steak in a ridged grill pan over medium-high heat for 4 minutes each side. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let stand.

In the same pan with the steak juices, add the bell peppers and onions. Saute the mixture for 3 minutes until the vegetables are limp. Thinly slice the steak against the grain on a diagonal.

Spread some guacamole on a tortilla, top with a few slices of steak, peppers and onions and salsa fresca. Roll up the tortilla to enclose the filling.

May also serve with sour cream and shredded cheese.
