One of the greatest graphic novel series of all time
Strangers in Paradise is the love story of Katchoo - a violent, intelligent, artisit blonde, with a troubled past and future, and Francine - the girl she grew up with, who's sweet and kind, has body image issues, and dreams of Mr. Right and the house with the white picket fence. It's also the story of art galleries and mobs, cancer and babies, death, guns, and school plays. Strangers in Paradise is kick ass, and philosophical, tasteful and sexy. The art is brilliant, and Terry Moore's lines are some of the few that make me want to draw cartoons instead of paintings.

During Indie Spotlight's long, long, long development, the one figure we never really got a clear look at was Katchoo - every time Shocker would bring prototypes to a show, the photos that came out afterwards failed to show her off properly. We even joked that she'd been sculpted blurry, but make no mistake, the final figure looks very crisp - and also very good.
Ultimately, Katchoo turned out a lot better than anyone would had predicted, and that's to Shocker's credit

Didn't They Make A Film Out Of Some of Moore's Graphic Novels?
Confused About Why They Haven't Been Mentioned?
However, his work is a lot darker and grittier than Alan Moore's. there's a lot of overlap, and both have worked on superhero comics, and both are very good writers and illustrators - but I'd recommend Strangers in Paradise to the more casual reader.
The Music of SiP
Lyrics, poetry and music are a strong unifying theme in the books. Songs appear throughout Strangers in Paradise, whether in games between the characters, or as complete or partial pages of writing. Emma had a song for Baby June, there's poetry and narrative soundtracks. There's a scene in which Katchoo and Francine are in a diner and started singing, and then the other has to sing the next line of the song. Poor David is rather confused, then has a go! Terry Moore also wrote a lot of his own poetry (which he also turned into songs).Most of the songs (not his, but all the others) are available online - they're by artists as varied as the Beatles, KD Lang, Tori Amos, Sting, Eva Cassidy and Juice Newton. Most of them can be heard here.
"Stranger in Paradise" is a song from the 1953 musical Kismet, which was originally "Polovetsian Dances" from Borodin's Prince Igor ! Many of the chapters (originally the individual comics) are named after songs - "Queen of Hearts" by Juice Newton, "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley

Over a hundred individual comics, ten hardbacks, nineteen individual graphic novels, six pocket books collecting the lot, and a treasury... which on earth do you buy?Well, the comics are much harder to find now, so that makes it a bit easier - unless you're a serious collector. The paperbacks and hardbacks that are coming out are big and beautiful, while the compilations are small and compact. Keeping them all straight can be a bit tricky, so if you're looking for number sixteen or trying to work out if you already have that issue in your current book, this page should help.

Six Small Pocketbooks Containing Everything
These small compilations are much easier on your wallet but less easy on the eye. They're only a5, compared to the original a4. On the other hand, there are only six of them and it's much easier to figure out which order they're supposed to be in.

The first five graphic novels
I prefer the original cover art of the smaller collections of the original comic releases - and you get a lot more of it with the single books, which are a fantastic display of different styles and art from plain comic to abstract to stylised, each suiting the mood of the story. They're much larger (A4 sized) and occasionally not always available.
