Ever wonder what the strangest things ever sold on ebay are?

I started wondering about the strangest things ever listed on eBay last year when I read that a New Zealand couple listed their Queen Size bed on Trade Me (the New Zealand eBay) for an auction starting at .99c. It didn't sound that strange until it was revealed that their entire house came with the bed! From memory, they had a 4 bedroom house on the West Coast of the South Island, decided the relocate and thought they'd try something unique to generate interest. It did get media attention and they went on to sell it for a reasonable price to a gentleman living in Auckland. Ever since then I've wondered, what are the strangest things being sold on eBay?

Selling your life on ebay!

In 2008 Ian Usher listed and sold his life on ebay. Below is an extract from his website:

''Hi there, my name is Ian Usher, and I have had enough of my life! I don't want it any more! You can have it if you like!
No, I'm not contemplating suicide, I am going to sell my life!! I have my reasons. However, I am still not sure whether this is inspired madness, complete foolishness, or just some sort of mid-life crisis. Whatever it is, it's all going up for sale in one big auction. Everything I have and everything I am.
On the day it is all sold and settled I intend to walk out of my front door with my wallet in one pocket and my passport in the other, nothing else at all, and get on the train, with no idea where I am going or what the future holds for me.''

The eBay auction ended on the 29th of June 2008 after attracting 66 bids and Ian received $399,300.00 Australian Dollars for his life. So, what happened next for a guy who had just sold his life?

A piece of cereal

In December 2004 a single piece of the Kellog's breakfast cereal Nutrigrain was sold on ebay for $1035 Australian Dollars by Chris Doyle. It had a resemblance to the the character E.T from the Steven Spielberg movie. Not only did the seller make over a thousand dollars on the auction, it is also reported he went on to make $3000 from appearing on the Australian television program 'A Current Affair'. The box of cereal initially cost him $6.25!

A grilled cheese sandwich

Could you imagine a grilled cheese sandwich selling on ebay? What about a 10 year old grilled cheese sandwich with a bite taken out of it? Selling for $28,000 US Dollars? It happened.

In 2004 a woman from Miami posted a slice of her 10 year old grilled cheese sandwich on ebay because it had an image of the Virgin Mary emblazoned on the top of it.

Ebay initially pulled the listing stating that they didn't accept joke auctions but it was eventually restored and sold for $28,000 to an online casino.

Woman who sold the right to name to her baby

In early 2005 Melissa Heuschkel couldn't decide what to name her fourth child, so she turned to ebay!. The bid was won for $15,500 US Dollars by Golden Palace casino. The baby was named Golden Palace Benedetto. Seriously.

Those of you with a keen eye would have noticed that Golden Palace casino also won the bid for the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

The Meaning of Life

Someone finally figured it out, the Meaning of life that is, and they put it up for sale on eBay. Even after fetching eight bids this incredible find didn't sell for much, but it was probably the best $3.26 the winning bidder ever spent.

My money's on the answer being 42.

Russian Test Space Shuttle

Here's an extract from the listing for the Russian Test Space Shuttle eBay Auction

"ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE AND 100% GENUINE! Rescued from Russia when Russia sold off many historical space items for US cash. Now located in Florida. This is a Bor-5 VKK (Spacecraft) and was used to test the aerodynamic characteristics of high altitude and extreme speed and heat on a space vehicle. It is an exact 1/8 scale model of the Russian "Buran" space shuttle. On the transporter, it weights about 4000 pounds. This is the only one left, of a fleet of six, and the only one that successfully met its test objectives. It was launched, June 22, 1988 from a two stage SL-8 rocket from the Russian Kapustin Yar test grounds and reached outer space (210 KMS). It descended, hitting mach 20 and temperatures of 16,000 K! It landed safely, after a flight of 2100 KMS, by parashute, near Lake Balkhash. The space shuttle shows the marks of extreme pressure and heat on its various mineral fibre glass coatings as well as the tungsten molybdenum nose fairing and leading edges of the wings. This Bor-5 was last exhibited at the Moscow "To The Stars" festival and is a unique and important historical relic. It cost the Russian BILLIONS of rubles to develop! It would make a fabulous exhibit and can be shipped, anywhere in the USA by large boat transporter van. Shipping and insurance to California, for example, would be about $5,000.00 Serious buyers can contact me for payment escrow with a local attorney."

It's not known how much they wanted for the spacecraft, because the reserve price was never reached. Bidding topped out at $25,200, but perhaps it was the $5,000 shipping price that scared off potential buyers.
