Strap Clips

Ranked #190,469 in Business & Work, #1,329,962 overall

Unless you are involved in the id card industry, chances are you do not know what a strap clip is. Just by looking at a strap clip, it is not immediately obvious what they are used for. As the name implies, it is essentially just a metal clip attached to a flexible nylon or plastic strap. A strap clip is used for attaching an id card to a person's clothing. The strap is fed through a slot in the id card and a small button holds it in place. At the other end of the strap clip there is a bulldog clip or another type of attachment such as a pin. It is the most basic way to display an id card.

Choosing a Strap Clip

Choosing a strap clip is relatively easy. There is not a lot of variation and most styles of strap clip will suit your needs. You basically have to choose the strap length, clip type, strap material and strap color.

Strap Length - Usually the straps range between 2 and 5 inches long. A longer strap may be required depending on the id card slot position or on the type of badge holder used. Here are some of the more common strap clip lengths: 2 1/4", 2 3/8", 2 5/8", 2 3/4", 3 1/2" and 4".

Clip Type - The clip on a strap clip is primarily a small bulldog clip. Some of the clips have holes to allow for greater attachment flexibility. Others have ribbed faces for a better grip. You can also get a clip with your logo embossed right on the face. To protect clothing, some clips have a rubber tip.

Strap Material - The strap of a strap clip is usually made of either nylon, plastic or mylar. Selection among these materials is dependent on the strength and durability required. Nylon would be the weakest of the three. Plastic would be average. Mylar would be the strongest and most durable choice.

Strap Color - When choosing color you have the choice of clear strap clips or colored strap clips. Most people choose to go with clear strap clips. These people want something that will look professional without standing out. It takes nothing away from the actual id card. Some people choose to use a colored strap clip to add a little something extra to their id cards. A strap clip that matches the colors on your id card is a nice touch. Sometimes you want your id to draw extra attention.

Alternative to Strap Clips

Although strap clips are the most popular choice when attaching id cards, they are not the only solution. Here are some other ways to attach your id cards.

Badge Clips - You could attach an id card directly to clothing by using a badge clip. Some badge clips have adhesive backings to stick directly to the id card.

Lanyards - You can display your id card around your neck with a lanyard. Lanyards have various attachments to choose from, some of which attach directly to an id card or a badge holder.

Badge Holders - Many badge holders have built in clips or pins that allow you to attach them directly to clothing. Plus a badge holder also protects your id cards against damage.

Badge Reels - A badge reel is a great option if you need to frequently scan your id card or present it to security. You can simply extend the badge to reach wherever it is needed. Afterwards the cord retracts to keep your id card out of the way.
