Strapless Bras That Stay Up

You've finally found that perfect wedding, party, or special occasion dress. But, it's strapless. What do you wear underneath? This is what started my original search for the perfect bra - a dress I got for a wedding. It was strapless. So, I headed off to the stores to buy a strapless bra. Not as easy as I thought.

The bras in my size were limited. The strapless bras even more so. The pretty strapless bras - practically non-existent. I didn't want to look like a granny (heck, my granny wouldn't have worn any of them; she liked pretty bras). Some of them slid down, others had no support (probably OK for smaller women, but not if you have a large bust).

So, here's a collection of pretty strapless, low back, push-up, plus size strapless, and longline or bustier bras for weddings, strapless or backless dresses, and summer tops. And, they all stay up where they're supposed to!

My Favorite Pretty Strapless Bra

Marie Jo Avero

The Marie Jo Avero Strapless Bra rocks! This is the bra I ended up buying for that wedding. It's really pretty, and it stayed up all day long (despite the heat and humidity).

The straps are decorated with applique daisies (they're so pretty, you almost don't mind if they show). There are matching flowers and lace on the front too. It's all smooth though, so nothing shows through.

Not to mention, I bought it four years ago — and it's in perfect condition. I was wearing it when I went shopping recently, and the fitting room attendant tried to restock it! Comes in cognac (shown) or black. Sizes 30C to 40D.

This Fantasie black strapless bra is great for larger cups. The silicone on the back helps keep everything where it belongs. The boning shapes (rather than add padding or size). It does come with straps, which you can wear the usual way, criss-cross, halter, or not at all. This bra runs a bit big. Sizes 30DD - 42D.

Five Strapless Bra Fit Tips

  • 1A strapless longline bra or bustier will smooth your midriff and help eliminate lumps and bumps. Perfect for gowns or a wedding dress.
  • 2Since the band has to do all the work on a strapless bra, look for a bra with at least two hooks. You'll also get a smoother look (no bulging and bumping) and the bra will go straight across your back, rather than riding up.
  • 3When you find a brand that fits you well, stick with it. Not every bra made by that manufacturer may work for you, but start there first.
  • 4Molded bras (meaning a bra with a defined shape (regardless of whether you're wearing it), tend to run a bit smaller than soft cup bras. Unless you're small busted, a molded strapless bra may be a better choice than a soft cup.
  • 5Look for silicone "grippers" along the bottom of the band - they'll help the bra stay up.

This bustier has seamless cups, extra lift and convertible/removable straps. Best for taller women. It's also got tummy control. Cups run a bit full. Comes in white, nude, and black sizes 34B to 42D, 38DDD. It's designed with a hidden corset inside (so the boning doesn't show through your dress).

This is similar to the bra above - except it's got a three-part cup (more support). The boning is more visible, but that also means you get a better cinching effect. Sizes 32C to 40 DDD, 42DD (white, cream, and black).

Push Up Strapless Bras

Pushup bras give you extra oomph (they are padded on the bottom to push up your tissue and give you more cleavage. They mostly come in smaller sizes, but there are some that go up to DD.
