Ranked #62,495 in Healthy Living, #699,474 overall

Fibromyalgia affects 3-6 million Americans, according to the American College of Rheumatology. It primarily affects women of child bearing age, but children, the elderly and men can also be affected. Common fibromyalgia symptoms include unusual fatigue, pain in the muscles, irritable bowels, depression, tinnitus, and headaches. There are no specific lab tests for fibromyalgia. The diagnosis is made by physical exam and symptoms - the most pronounced being hypersensitivity to pain.

Because the medication FDA approved for fibromyalgia is often ineffective and has multiple side effects, most healthcare providers recommend drug-free ways of lessening the disability associated with fibromyalgia. Here are some good suggestions:

1. Get the proper amount of sleep each night. Try to keep the same sleep schedule, even on the weekends.
2. Start a regular exercise program. Not only will it help you sleep better, but research shows that strength training and aerobic activity will decrease pain, stiffness, depression and fatigue.
3. Increase your intake of Vit D. New studies show a favorable effect on muscle pain.
4. Treat depression and anxiety with a mental health professional. Without emotional balance, it is very difficult to live with fibromyalgia.
5. Improve your diet. Avoid wheat, dairy, corn, citrus, soy and nuts. Avoid processed food and increase fresh, whole foods, organic if possible.
