Strawberry Shortcake Vintage Dolls

History

The original design of Strawberry Shortcake 1979 Vintage Doll and her cat Custard was done in 1977 by Muriel Fahrion during her time as a greeting card illustrator at American Greetings' Juvenile & Humorous card department. After the idea was presented to Bernie Loomis of General Mills and became a licensing entity, Fahrion designed a subsequent thirty-two characters for Those Characters From Cleveland (American Greetings' toy & licensing design division).

The Strawberry Shortcake Vintage Doll line of characters each had their own fruity or dessert-themed name with clothing to match, and they each had a dessert- or fruit-named pet. Like the Strawberry Shortcake doll, all the other characters' dolls had hair scented to match their dessert theme. The characters lived and played in a magical world known as Strawberryland.

During the 1980s, Strawberry Shortcake became a huge fad.

In 1991, THQ tried reviving the franchise by producing an updated line of Strawberry Shortcake dolls. Strawberry and five of her classic friends each got a makeover, with new clothes, hair, and eyes. However, the line enjoyed at best a modest success, lasting just the one year.

In 2002, the franchise was revived again, this time with a revamped look by a different designer.

In 2006, Playmates Toys picked up the rights to make Strawberry Shortcake figures. The line is named "A World Of Friends". The doll Frosty Puff was new to this line, but, although a good deal of shuffling and re-distribution was made concerning the pets of the re-launched characters, very few of the new dolls were actually merchandised with pets. The line was received with mixed reactions. However, overall reaction towards Playmates' line was negative. As a result, Playmates Toys lost the rights to Hasbro, who will be putting out new toys beginning fall 2009, after American Greetings reboots the franchise again.

Strawberry Shortcake and pet Custard
Strawberry Shortcake is the protagonist and the title character of the Strawberry Shortcake franchise. She is a bright and energetic little girl with red hair and freckles, said to be about six years old. She usually wears a red dress with a white pinafore, and a large pink bonnet decorated with strawberries. In her earliest adventures, Strawberry's home was a shortcake surrounded by well-tended strawberry vines, but in 1983 she moved into her "Berry Happy Home", a large and ornate mansion. Strawberry is kind, resourceful, and always ready to help a friend in need.

Since I was I little girl I had always love Strawberry Shortcake and her delicious smelling friends. I think I had most of the toys and dolls but, of course, time has passed and I misplaced my childhood toys.

I'd always wanted to find the Strawberry Shortcake Dolls no matter what. I knew that some people may have them or maybe collecting them.

It wasn't until 2001, when I say a Strawberry Shortcake doll at K-mart. I couldn't believe it! Although the dolls looked different from the ones I had when I was a little girl, they still looked so cute and adorable I had to buy it.

That's how I started to collect the dolls again. I found most of the vintage dolls on eBay. And the rest of them, bought them for my daughter (and me) at regular stores.

Ingredients

* 3 pints fresh strawberries
* 1/2 cup white sugar

* 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 4 teaspoons baking powder
* 2 tablespoons white sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/3 cup shortening
* 1 egg
* 2/3 cup milk
* 2 cups whipped heavy cream

DIRECTIONS

1. Slice the strawberries and toss them with 1/2
cup of white sugar. Set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
Grease and flour one 8 inch round cake pan.

3. In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking
powder, 2 tablespoons white sugar and the
salt. With a pastry blender cut in the
shortening until the mixture resembles coarse
crumbs. Make a well in the center and add the
beaten egg and milk. Stir until just combined.

4. Spread the batter into the prepared pan. Bake
at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 15 to 20
minutes or until golden brown. Let cool
partially in pan on wire rack.

5. Slice partially cooled cake in half, making
two layers. Place half of the strawberries on
one layer and top with the other layer. Top
with remaining strawberries and cover with the
whipped cream.
