Berry Vintage Strawberry

Kenner's Little Sweetheart

This is the Strawberry Shortcake that many of us know and love--a Red dress, green tights, and don't forget her sweet apron!

The original line of Strawberry Shortcake dolls were produced by Kenner Toys from 1979-1985. But did you know that Strawberry Shortcake began as a very popular line of greeting cards from the American Greetings Corporation?

Strawberry Shortcake was always accompanied by Custard, her pink polka-dotted kitten. She also had many friends in Strawberryland, including Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Apple Dumplin', Raspberry Tart, Orange Blossom, Lemon Meringue and Angel Cake... just to name a few! Each doll was scented and came with a darling little pet of their own. Of course, there were also dozens of accessories for Strawberry Shortcake, including everything from clothes to bikes to a doll house with it's own collection of berry sweet furniture. She even was the star of her own videos!

...for A Berry Sweet Commercial!

Oh, they just don't make them like this anymore, and that goes for both the dolls and these great old commercials! Don't they bring back memories?

Revival in the '90's by THQ

At least they tried...

In 1991, six years after Kenner discontinued it's line of dolls, Toy HeadQuarters (THQ), a company better known for developing and publishing video games, released a more modern version of Strawberry Shortcake and her friends.

The dolls each had a familiar look to them, however they were not as popular as their original counterparts. It just wasn't the right time--yet. Strawberry Shortcake wouldn't make another appearance as a doll for another 11 years!

Despite the lack of interest, many collectors today simply adore these dolls! I even found an entire site dedicated to Strawberry Shortcake's "lost years" in the 1990's. Did you know that the THQ line was inspired by a paper doll book from 1984? You can read all about it and see the striking similarities here: Origins of 1991 Dolls.

The New Girl in Town

Bandai's 2002 Edition

In 2002, Strawberry Shortcake and friends were revived and revamped again, this time by Bandai--the world's third largest producer of toys.

I have to admit, when I first came across this doll in Target, I was very disappointed in her appearance. The Strawberry Shortcake of my day was a sweet little cupcake in a girly dress, not a tom-boy in jeans! And I wasn't too fond of the look of her new found friends, either! What was so wrong with the original look of Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie?! Care Bears, Transformers and Cabbage Patch Kids all retained their classic looks! It just wasn't fair...

It appears, though, that this version, while it was popular and began the new revival, is being phased out. And that's good news to me! Read on for more information on Playmate's new line of dolls.

Leaving Berry Soon?

Goodbye, Bandai!

I couldn't find a single doll from the Bandai collection for sale on Amazon (which, honestly, I'm glad about). But if you like this girly, you better get your hands on these items while they last!

Favor Swirl? Candy Pop? Berry Sweet!

Hello to Playmates!

In 2006, Playmates acquired the rights to make Strawberry Shortcake figures. And boy, have they hit the ground running! Playmates has created a line of several different types of Strawberry Shortcake dolls, ranging from magnetic miniatures to 15 inch "American Girl" style dolls. Their line of toys includes:

  • Favor Swirl Dolls

  • Candy Pop Dolls

  • Sweet Berry Rides

  • Play Date Pals

  • Berry Beautiful Dolls

  • Berry And Bead Shops

  • Tiny Treats

Right now, Strawberry Shortcake has only a handful of friends, some old and some new. And she appears to be the only one who has a pet. But I think this is a much more promising venture then the Bandai one was! At least, I'm berry glad to see Strawberry and friends looking so sweet and girly again. Not a pair of pants in the bunch. Whew!

Isn't She Lovely?!

The New Playmates Line of Dolls

Now, these I think have some potential to make their way into my daughter's toy box! Long hair and a sweet dress? Oh, yes! I love it!
