Streaming Music and Video to your Home Network

So you've built up this massive library of movies and music on your computer, all legally of course, and you want to access it from your couch without having to move your desktop computer to the couch. Your a connected individual, you own a tablet, an Iphone, and a Xbox 360 is attached to the TV so why haven't you set up a home network that connects all those devices to your digital media? There are hundreds of programs that will stream music, but not video, or video but not music and you aren't all that good with computers so you need something simple, plug and play and forget. If so this is the article for you! In 15 minutes or less you will be able to access your media from any device connected to your wireless or wired network.

All you need is 4 simple ingredients:

~ A computer, desktop or laptop, attached to a home network (wired or wireless)
~ A digital library of movies or music.
~ A program called TVersity which streams your digital library.
~ A device to stream your library too!

Streaming your Media

This article assumes that you have a wireless home network, this will work if the network is wired as well, however most tablets and phones can not be wired, only devices like the Xbox 360 or a PS3 can be hardwired. We've established that you have a computer, and you have media, songs or movies, that you want to be able to watch anywhere in your home from any device. First we need to stream your media to do this follow the step by step process laid out below:

1. Go to your computer, make sure its on, and go online.

2. Go to TVersity and download the media server, there is a download link in the banner at the top of the page.

3. While the program downloads take a look at the TVersity website, there are helpful videos and screenshots on how to set up TVersity on most devices in the marketplace today.

4. Install the TVersity Program, this is an easy step by step process.

5. TVersity should run automatically, if not start it from your start menu.

6. Go to the Library tab in TVersity, click on add Items and add the folders that contain your music and movies.

7. Your done! TVersity is now ready to stream on your network!

As many astute users will notice there are a lot of settings and tabs in the program that you can play around with, this article doesn't deal with them as the default settings will let you stream your media on your network immediately. You can for example set the program up to stream over the internet, thus giving you the option of listening to your music from anywhere in the world if you have an internet connection. You can also see what devices are attached to your network, and which ones are streaming from TVersity.

As a final note on TVersity, will run the media server at start up but if you want to access the program you have to get to it through the start menu. Even if the TVersity program isn't open, the media server will still be running. Your computer must be on if you wish to stream your media, the program doesn't work if your computer isn't plugged in.

Connecting Windows Devices to the Media Server

Other Computers, Xbox, and Windows Based Phones

Xbox 360The beauty of the TVersity media server is how easy it is to connect devices to it. You can connect through DLNA / UPnP A/V protocol, or you can connect through your web browser, these sections will give you a brief overview on how to do both.

Windows based devices will automatically notice the TVersity media server and will be ready to play your media by the time you leave your computer and head over to your Xbox, laptop, or smartphone. Windows will play this media using the Windows Media Player. You can view your digital library by going to the network explorer and clicking on the TVersity media server or by simply running Windows Media Player and going to other libraries.

To view your movies on your Xbox for example, simply go to the video tab, click on my video apps, then video player and select the TVersity media server.

Connecting Mac Devices to the Media Server

Iphones, Ipads, Icraps

IphoneMac based devices may notice the server through DLNA / UPnP A/V when you access your media player, if it does not however you can simply direct your web browser to your server. This requires an IP address and the TVersity port number which is 41952.

~Don't panic, finding out your IP address is easy.
~Go to your computer, in the start menu type in cmd
~In the window that pops up type in ipconfg
~A bunch of stuff pops up, find the line that says: IPv4 Address, mine is 192.168.0.194
~In your web browser on your mac device type in 192.168.0.194:41952
~up pops your TVersity media server and you can access all your media!

Connecting Android Devices to the Media Server

All versions, All manufactures, All models

Android ManAndroids can connect to the server through your browser the same way you can with a Mac device, however I prefer to use the UPNP protocol. This is simple to set up with a few apps from the android market.

~ Search for BubbleUPnP and install it on your Android
~ Run BubbleUPnP, click on the devices tab and select the TVersity Media Server
~ Move over to the Library tab, select your audio or video and open your media
~ chose your media player, you can use the default player or you can download a better one.
~ I recommend MX Video Player which can be found on the Android Market
