Street Fighter Chun Li Costume Choices & Making Tips

In this article, I would like to talk about the Street Fighter Chun Li costume and tips to make the costume and the spiky bracelet.

Street Fighter series have been fantasizing a lot of people all over the world. Cosplayers are crazy about enjoying the fun by portraying the Chun Li, called "First Lady of Fighting Games" among the enthusiasts.

Characteristics of Chun Li

First of all, let's begin with the elements of Chun Li looks.

Known as the first lady of Street Fighter, Chun Li is depicted as a young girl with the quest to venger her father, who was murdered while investigating Bison's crime svndicate. Her clinging desire to achieve the goal makes her one of the either street fighters, the only female, in the organization.

In the Street Fighter II sub-series, Chun Li mostly appears wearing a Qipao, an early 20th Chinese dress for women. Originally Chun Li dons an orange Qipao instead of blue. This dress is actually not a generic Qipao but modified to allow a far wider range of movement with less fabric as the skirt. Her ensemble also includes a pair of white combat boots and brown pantyhose. Chun Li is noted wearing her hair in "ox horns". She wears silk brocades and ribbons in white in her hair to signifying mourning the death of her father. There is also a wide white sash added on the waist for the same aim. At last, the spiky bracelets on her wrists finish the vivid Chun Li cosplay look.

In the street Fighter IV, Chun Li's alternate outfit is composed of black night gown with gold accents at the bottom and the bust area. She wears a black and gold sash held by a red rope-like belt. She wears her ox horns unadorned, only this time it's held by red ropes with golden balls at the tip. The outfit is completed with red shoes, gold earrings, and black and golden spiky bracelets, the outfit resembles the clothes she worn in one of the episode of the American cartoon series Street Fighter. Whatever, the costume to cosplay Chun Li today can be also found as blue Qipao with golden details on the bust area, and white ribbons in the ox horn styled hair, white sash and skin toned pantyhose. The spiky bracelets are most as the signature of Chun Li.

When it comes to cosplaying Chun Li, any girl would be happy to be that alluring but never being conscious about her large thighs or fat legs. Chun Li is known for that characteristic and what you have will just make you the return of Chun Li perfectly. Also she has stronger arms than those of any other female character in the games. But unexpected, Chun Li still appears petite and slim in official and unofficial artworks alike.

Tips and Tricks to Make Chun Li's Costume & Bracelets

Many cosplayers today are very creative on making the costume and necessary accessories to portray Chun Li. And here come some nice tips from experienced cosplayers to make the costume and the spiky bracelets.

Chun Li Qipao

In most cases, her dress is the modified dress of a normal silky Qipao in any dress store. You can just easily find a Qipao with sleeves and styled the skirt area and modify the sleeves accordingly. Though a lot of sewing work is needed and a great work will be the wonderful reward. For the golden detail on the bust area, most cosplayers are using gold or a shiny yellow fabric. First draw out your designs. (Using a curved ruler really helps make them look sharp and crisp). Cut out your design and then iron it onto your Qipao, Do a top stitch about 1/8 to 1/16 from the outer edges of your design and you've finished. As well, you could do a satin stitch around the edges.

Chun Li Bracelets

Here I've got two ideas to figure it out!

First Idea: You need thick foam, black cloth, something to sew with or glue (glue looks tacky). After everything is ready, get a strip of the yellow/white foam that's about one inch thick. Then take your black cloth make a sleeve like shealth for the foam to go into. Turn the casing inside out. Then you can slide the foam through the center. Take both end and put them together and stitch/glue them together and this should make the basic bracelet. For the spikes, metal frosting tips (for cake decorating) then hot glued them onto the bracelet and you got the spikes.
The second idea: you need thick wood, sand paper, wood dowels and wood cones, black cloth, black and sliver paint (cloth is better around your wrists), wood blue. WARNING: If you are not familiar with working with wood or tools to cut wood, ask for help.

Everything ready? Make a round hole big enough to fit your hand through, but also loose enough to allow a pad (cloth or whatever) in also to prevent your wrists from going raw. Now around the center circle, make another circle about an inch and a half away from the edge of the circle. When you have a doughnut thing, make sure you sand down the inside and outside of the circle. At this point you can do one of two things: you can paint it black or just cut the circle in half and make sleaves for the pieces you need to drill a hole in each half exactly even and the same size, so you have a hole on each spot, this is where we put the dowels in and bring them together. The wood cones are going to be glued onto the doughnuts and painted sliver. And the last thing is just to polish your work with sand paper and paint it to the color you need.

Also, some cosplayers make the spiky bracelets with clay and Styrofoam. This method would be much easier but the finished work would be not sturdy enough to stand for a whole day if not cared well.

All in all, most cosplayers think that cosplaying Chun Li is a real chanllenge but after their hard work on making the costume and bracelets by their own, the final ensemble can still kick the ass. However, if you do really show no interests in making the costume, it is certain that you can still find off-the-rack Chun Li cosplay costume in either real store or online shop. In fact, todays's market is flooded with quality cosplay costumes and you can just purchase what you need with the least cost. Do do other need things like wigs, ribbons, shoes, etc.
