MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING FOR THE STREET
I have great respect for anyone who trains for boxing, MMA, or full contact karate. The level of dedication and heart shown in these circles is inspiring and hard to come by.
If you have never tried to go for three 3-minute rounds on a heavy bag, you should. It will probably change the way you look at these athletes.
Amateur boxers often go for six 3-minute rounds, getting constantly rocked in their ribs and upside their heads.
Good MMA fighters are training fanatics. They are monsters in the gym year-round, taking it to the cage every once in a while.
Of course, there are lots of safety precautions in competitions like these:
-protective gear is worn
-time limits are set,
-fighters are matched according to size and skill
-particularly dangerous moves are outlawed
In a real life violent conflict, there are no such courtesies extended.
When training for defending ourselves on the street, therefore, we take a different approach.
The purpose of this lens is to shed light on street fighting tactics and training. I will keep it posted with relevant articles and videos.

A Good Example of Street Fighting Training
Sammy Franco is on the cutting edge of reality based fighting techniques. This clip shows lots of practical and intense training methods.
Notice that the training scenarios include multiple attackers, ambushes, and unarmed defense against an armed assailant

TRAINING FOR "UNFAIR" SITUATIONS
Violent aggressors don't play by rules. They may be:
-bigger than you
-stronger than you
-driven by anger or hatred
-under the influence of drugs or alcohol
-armed
-willing to take your life to get what they want from you
When we train for real-life conflict, we should take all of these factors into consideration. Prepare yourself for "unfair" situations by:
1. Training with people who are larger or stronger than you whenever possible. This will help you get a feel for the disadvantage, and experience in overcoming it.
2. Training unarmed against partners who are armed with knives or sticks. You can use training knives made of wood, rubber, aluminum, etc.
3. Training to defend yourself against multiple attackers. Get a few friends together and take turns playing the victim.
Be sure to seek out quality instruction. I offer practical Self-Defense courses. I don't have a school, but I regularly teach people outside my apartment building or at their own homes. I'm sure there are martial artists in your area who are willing to do the same.
