"As I photograph with my little Leica, I have the feeling that there is something so right about it: with one eye that is closed one looks within. With the other eye that is open one looks without." Henri Cartier-Bresson

"You can put me in front of the most beautiful landscape, and I just don't see it. I've tried and it doesn't work...I just don't feel it. I'm a city kid, I feel good on the street, I feel the pulse of the street, and my 'subjects' can sense that I feel that way and they usually trust me."

A Different Kind of Street Photography Experience

The Thought Project
"Over a period of 3 months I stopped 150 strangers on the street and asked them what they where thinking about the second before I stopped them. Using a mic and a dictaphone I recorded what they told me, then took a picture of them. The interviews took place in Copenhagen, Denmark and New York City. " Simon Hoegsberg

For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to "give a meaning" to the world, one has to feel involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression.

Thoughts On Street Photography

in-public
What is Street Photography?

..."Primarily Street Photography is not reportage, it is not a series of images displaying, together, the different facets of a subject or issue. For the Street Photographer there is no specific subject matter and only the issue of 'life' in general, he does not leave the house in the morning with an agenda and he doesn't visualise his photographs in advance of taking them. Street Photography is about seeing and reacting, almost by-passing thought altogether."
Johnny Mobasher
"Street Photography?? I have done a full circle on this one! there are lots of clever ways that Street Photography has been explained, some of which you can NOT even understand as its TOO clever! I think its the love of taking pictures wherever you are,Slices of Life & thats Street Photography."
The Challenges Of Street Photography

..."The mystery: One of the best things about street photography is that it is like going on an unknown voyage. You just never know what you are going to find, or what shots you are going to make."

Words, Photography, The Street

  • "You know, he (Winogrand) set a tempo on the street so strong that it was impossible not to follow it. It was like jazz. You just had to get in the same groove..." Joel Meyerowitz
  • "A photographer's main instrument is his eyes. Strange as it may seem, many photographers choose to use the eyes of another photographer, past or present, instead of their own. Those photographers are blind." Manuel Alvarez Bravo
  • "My best work is often almost unconscious and occurs ahead of my ability to understand it." Sam Abell

Street Photography Defined

From Wikipedia
Street photography generally refers to photographs made in public places - not only streets, but parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and myriad other settings - often but not always featuring people, usually in unposed or candid situations, going about their everyday lives.
