The Streets of Phnom Penh: No Rules Small Business 101!
The Streets of Phnom Penh are the most productive space on earth. We trudge the downtown route most Saturday mornings in a desperate effort to match weight and fitness so we've watched and dodged as the street-siders and carts come and go. The range and volume of business going in every little lane and alley and cul-de sac and cross street is a cathedral to entrepreneurialism. Every small opening is a symphony of barber shops and phone vendors, mom and pop stores or eateries and business card printers, wedding packagers, beauticians and motor bike repair shops.
The streets are a tumble of parked cars, vans, motos, tuk tuks, motorbikes, bicycle rickshaws and hand carts. Every corner is a restaurant, coffee shop or bakery with tables of noodles and mystery meats just waiting. And to top it off are the peddlers or street hawkers with the last bag of sun glasses or toys they were able to slip in from China, Vietnam or Thailand. And then the grandmas with their instant cooking of noodles and fresh greens packables and brought to the shop door.
The next street may be filled with on-the-street light industry rebuilding air cons and TVs or making doors in steel or wood with fireworks of sparks illuminating the back of dark storage spaces. Sandwiched in may be a sculptor doing unique, austere Buddhas or a painter of Chinese fish. Happy. Loud and colorful. Better than a Rock Show and it's all for free.

Independence Day Celebration at Phnom Penh Today
People Line Up in the Streets
On November 9, Phnom Penh celebrates its Independence Day and the city is gathered around the Independence Monument. The King and the senior officials are all there. People line up in the streets waving pictures of the King and also of the King Father and Mother. The King Father has played a key role in Cambodia's independence and he has recently decided to reside in Cambodia after residing in China to get the health care he needed.

Phnom Penh Street Names
House Numbers Updated

Phnom Penh's street and house numbering has been improved since 2011. Residents of Phnom Penh can get new numbers for their house upon payment of $4. Some people still contested this as too expensive. But without proper street names and house numbers, it is difficult to deliver services in the city. Many houses and even streets have as yet to get their signs. It is easy to get lost even when you have the map as the signs are not properly placed. Hopefully, 2012 will bring in the new signs but better still to trust your tuk-tuk driver.

Phnom Penh Streets: A Human Steeplechase
Navigating Phnom Penh Streets is a Sport
And often we are the only barangs (foreigners) doing the trudge but always with big smiles aimed at us and even waves from those that recognize our doughy forms from earlier weeks. We navigate through all the hustle and bustle of these streets ducking around the transports and escaping onto the road when the streets overflow.
Sometimes, we have to turn back because we just can't get through and it can test your patience when the sun gets too hot, but a quick duck into an aircon show room and, in a minute or two, the good temper returns.
The Contest for Walk Space in Phnom Penh
Sharing with the denizens of the streets of the Penh

Pedestrianism is a mark of poverty so the contest for walk space is not too bad. The Khmers don't like walking when the sun is up. So this maze is no real bother except for lost Aussies and enormous back packs inside which are teeny trekkers.
And for the denizens of the street, this is not special. It is their life and they are part of it every second. It is only unusual for us. Motorbikes share the very narrow path in the market already full of people buying vegetables, fruits and fish on both sides.
Patience is very well understood and lived here and the concept of sharing space is a way of life. Still, there are almost no beggars and no harassment by the wallahs. They stay close to the walls of tourist places.

Celebrate the Chaos of Life in the streets of Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh streets have chaos and life indeed!

So, get here quickly. This won't last. This hints of Paris and London of the 18th century when cities were not sterility zones. This is the Singapore and Hong Kong of late Kipling and early Michener and middle Conrad and Greene-noire. You can walk in history and celebrate the chaos of life.
Street 240
Upscale shopping, spa and hanging out with friends
This street is one of my favourites. I go to Red Apron (just across from the Palace) to buy wine (virtually untaxed) or just hang out on a Friday evening tasting some of the new ones or those taxed beyond reason in western countries. The design is contemporary with white comfortable chairs mixed with red ones and beautiful original paintings. With tasteful decor, no other wine bar can give you an ambiance for tasting some fabulous wines you've only read about before.
There is The Shop, popular for lunches, with its ciabattas, foccacias, and sandwiches as well as mouth watering desserts. Its sister restaurant, Chocolatier, sells the best Belgian chocolates and the brownies are just what they should be. Other restaurants dot the street. Frizz is where you can learn Khmer cooking and The Tamarind is great for Mediterranean mezze.
There is the Water Lily for those fashion jewelry enthusiasts and for clothes divas, Jasmine is at the top.You can also browse in Bliss as you wait for your turn at their spa. This store has some of the most colourful children's clothes and cushions. And also comfortable clothes for women. For gifts, check out Couleurs d'Asie or Mekong Quilts. Friends has also a store here, an NGO that trains street children.
If you want to hang out with friends and shop around for unique gifts or just try out some clothes, this street offers choice options.

The Art Street in Phnom Penh
This street is lined with galleries and you can get original art pieces from painting to sculpture for less than $10. Some of Cambodia's best artists have galleries here or their works are displayed here. Just spend time walking the street and watch the artists work. . You can check out Reyum Institute to look at the books available and learn something about Cambodian painters. Hey...remember to pop into FCC (the Foreign Correspondents Club...just a few blocks away. They have great photography exhibitions there as well as comfort food for the stranger.

Restaurants, Spas, Gym and Sports Bars

If you are a sports fan, there is a Sports Bar that just opened, SCORE. It is huge and contemporary. Beats many sports bar in other big cities and wow...is it fun. Premier league...World Cup (s), Aussie Rule mayhem...with a serious expat community, nations are all represented and the noise is amazing. And if you are a gym enthusiast, three stories of fitness choices from a juice bar, to swimming pool with a valet to serve you. It is aptly named: The Place. Indeed!
Restaurants and hotels line the street with choices of Nepali, Indian, Fusion, Greek, French and Khmer. More recently, La Cita Rendezvous opened its Latino restaurant and offered aficionados the authentic taste of Chile and Bolivia. Richard is owner chef and he is passionated about everything . Another new entry is Mangosteen. It is immaculate in white and serves local Khmer food. The newly renovated Charcoal has renamed itself, Flavours after it has doubled its size. You can swim and dine at Villa Langka, a well situated boutique hotel with lots of greenery.
The other streets around offer more restaurants, upscale stores and apartments for those who want to rent for a month or two or years, too. BKK1 as this area is called is popular to expats working here or just whiling winter away.

The Golden Street of Phnom Penh
St. 278
There is no other street like this one. close to Wat Lanka, it is full of hotels and guest houses as well as restaurants and shops. It is alive and a favourite to many expats who have taken up residence in the hotels and guesthouses. The street is lined with motos and tuktuks ferrying passengers eating, shopping or living in this street. It earned its name as the Golden Street because almost every business in this street bears the name Golden. There is Golden Gate Hotel, Golden Star, Golden Sun and many other lesser goldens.
Do you like walking in crowded streets?
Phnom Penh is the place to go
Walking in crowded streets is not for everyone. Sometimes, it taxes my patience and I bark at an unsuspecting someone. But most of the time, I enjoy the walk and feel among friends, because of the local color, the street life, the smiles and wonder.
At times, I borrow a chair in the side walk and just hunker down there enjoying the life of the street. In some countries, there are times when the only thing one can do is hire a hotel car and enjoy the city from the inside of the car. But here, no one bugs you or paws at you begging. But again, it depends on your comfort level.
I had my father's old watch that we had tried to have repaired again and again in the developed world. Here, our watch guy on the street happily took on the task. It took him a few weeks to find the parts for the antique watch but he painstakingly restored it as he had many of our watches before. For this one, I just could not believe how much work there is in just working his networks to scrounge the parts. He only charged me $20. Phnom Penh streets offer bargains you can't find elsewhere. So bring your glasses prescriptions, as well as your old watches.

Do you like busy city streets?
Or country pathways?
City streets fascinate a lot of people. They enjoy trudging through the alleyways and explore stores for wonderful finds. Other people much prefer going to the country and explore farms and farmers markets and quaint little villages with their antique shops.
Which of these do you enjoy most?

Walking the city streets
Walking country pathways
skiesgreen says:
The only place I have really experienced crowds similar to this was in Rome. The noise turns me off rather than the mob.
fanfreluche says:
I prefer country path to busy city, but still I do enjoy cities too, not too crowded
Graceonline says:
Although I enjoy living on our busy street corner, I much prefer the quiet of country life, especially after the planting and before the harvest in organic farmland, because we can hear the birds sing and the little furry creatures scampering in the bushes. Give me fresh air!
Sleep in Phnom Penh Streets
Just tie your hammock on a tree

Many do this especially the drivers. They all have their hammocks in the trunk of the car and each time they have to wait, they just hang this on a tree and presto...a good sleep.
Tap Water in Phnom Penh
Safe to drink
Yes, Phnom Penh has more than adequate water supply and studies have shown that tap water in this city is safe to drink. And recently, this has been confirmed by the award given the authority in charge. Read the following news copied from Khmerviews.com. The link is included below for those who want to read more on this.
In recognition of its world class performance in water supply and self-sufficiency, the Cambodian Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) under the leadership of General Director Ek Sonn Chan has been named the winner of the Stockholm Industry Water Award 2010, says a message received from Stockholm, Sweden.
Historically, the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, thrived by the rivers of Tonle Sap and the Mekong. However, decades of conflicts left the water supply system running low until the 1990s. In 1993 Mr. Ek Sonn Chan was appointed as General Director of the city's Water Supply Authority (PPWSA). Together with his team, he managed to refurbish the whole supply system, introduce cost-effective billing and payment collection methods, as well as world class management to provide water to almost all of the city's residents.

Hawkers are Identified in Phnom Penh Streets
By the Sounds They Make

The Hawkers' Song
Unique in the Streets of Phnom Penh

Many hawkers still proliferate the streets of Phnom Penh and each of them produce their own unique sounds so people even from inside their homes will know they are passing by and what exactly they are selling. Be it boiled eggs or noodles, Phnom Penh residents know. In fact, Cambodians abroad miss these sounds of their country which led Cambodian artists Srey Bandol and Meas Sokhorn in partnership with Australian artists, Sue McCauley and Keith Deverill to produce a video entitled The Hawkers Song to preserve such a significant part of Cambodian street culture.
For the Cambodian artists, these sounds are not just to identify the hawkers' ware but a living performance.

Keeping Phnom Penh Streets Safe
Especially for Kids
The streets of Phnom Penh are often scrubbed and tarted up a bit by of non-government organizations. One of the most successful is Friends...the Quakers. They have social workers and volunteers who go to the streets of Phnom Penh and round up the kids who are homeless and jobless and give them skills in serving in their famous restaurants, Friends and Romdeng. Some who are younger are given basic education. Recently, they have started to give them vocational skills so they can find employment. Don Bosco do fantastic work giving street kids skills as does Pour un Sourire d'Enfant.
The Japan Fund for Poverty Alleviation managed by the Asian Development Bank through Cambodia's Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training has also piloted bridging programs to help Phnom Penh street kids to have basic skills to enrol in technical colleges. The link below will detail some of the work being done.
