My dad did light dumbbells right up until is last year at almost 87. Even after two broken legs and a broken hip, he still got in the pool for exercise, too!

You are right that exercise does not need to be strenuous. Consistent and persistent can be wonderful too. This lens gives some good ideas: http://www.squidoo.com/best-thing-to-do-for-your-health

the bones of old people are brittle. i guess that they should not lift any heavy dumbbells. they might end up with displaced joints.

I walk large dogs everyday which is kind of like walking and bench pressing at the same time but now I am thinking about adding a few weight exercises too.

I always thought if I'm fortunate to be a little ole lady one day, I want to be a healthy little ole lady.

The benefits of strength training certainly can include living independently and self sufficiently for extended periods of time and that is something we should all be aiming for. Nicely done!

Older people can get a lot of benefit from
muscle building. It keeps them on their feet - use it or lo se it.

I'm only 57, but on chemo after brain surgery a few months ago. I noticed I was very weak after surgery; started workouts with very little weight -- 30 lbs on most of the machines at the gym. Now I work with 70-100 lbs, always ending with a cool-off with 50 lbs. I feel great.

What you are saying in this lens is true. But I also must say that you need to strengthen your mentality first. Old people are not lazy, just very tired.

Good ideas. It is too easy to just sit back and allow your muscles to degenerate as you get older.
