Stress in the Workplace

Stress in the workplace can make it impossible to do your job effectively. Plus, the effects of workplace stress can spill over into your home life. It's important to learn how to manage stress in the workplace. There are several relaxation techniques you can use, even with limited time at work. In this lens, I'll be exploring the issue of stress in the workplace and how to deal with it.

Stress in the Workplace

How to reduce workplace stress

At work our buttons can easily be pushed by co-workers, our boss or the project deadlines we are under. There can also be pressure about meeting presentations, sales quotas and customer service. If we don't get sufficient sleep or have family issues, this can also make us on edge before the work day even begins.

It's important to help reduce stress in the workplace to have a few quick coping devices you can use. If you remember to keep in mind that others around you are stressed out as well you won't take their words so personally. Others come to work and may have car problems, a child disappointed with them or a sick parent. Trying to remember that the person in front of you also has a full life can help you to not take things as a personal attack. In addition some breathing techniques, chair yoga at your desk and looking at a picture in your wallet of your family or loved one can help change your perspective.

Physical Symptoms of Stress in the Workplace

Stress at work can result in actual physical pain

A common physical symptom of stress in the workplace is muscle tension or pain. People hold a lot of emotions in their shoulders and back and a common complaint is that of back pain as well of tightness in the shoulders and neck. Though massage can be helpful, it is important to try to see the root of the stress so that the stress just doesn't re-appear after the massage session is over. Insight is the best tool for a long-term solution to stress in the workplace.

Other physical symptoms of stress in the workplace can include high blood pressure, weight gain or loss, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, sleep problems, digestive issues and headaches. Our bodies and minds are very connected so tension in our minds manifests in our bodies as well. A proper diet, sufficient sleep and exercise will be helpful to cope with stress in the workplace.
