Breathing techniques to help relieve stress
You feel tense; you might be worried about any number of things. Your job, your health, your family, it could be anything. Stress has taken over your body and one of the first things that you notice is that your breathing is different than usual.
What is stress?
Stress is your body's reaction to pressure that is put upon us by activities or events. Not only can the stress cause you headaches and anxiety but your heart will beat faster and your breathing might become more difficult. A lack of concentration and an upset stomach commonly occur when stress happens.
Breathing and stress
What is the connection between breathing and stress?
When we are under extreme stress our breathing may become so difficult that we hyperventilate, which means to breathe rapidly. This is our body's way of controlling extreme stress.
What is deep breathing?
According to Wikipedia deep breathing is "is the act of breathing deep into one's lungs by flexing one's diaphragm rather than breathing shallowly by flexing one's rib cage. This deep breathing is marked by expansion of the stomach (abdomen) rather than the chest when breathing. It is generally considered a healthier and fuller way to ingest oxygen, and is often used as a therapy for hyperventilation."
What is an Adjustment disorder?
Stress can be caused by many things such as worrying about future events or being flustered about things that have happened recently. Big events in life that you have to become adjusted to are also stress producers. These are referred to as Adjustment disorders.
Combine visualization with breathing
Visualization is where you close your eyes and imagine that you are in a state of total relaxation. Breathing can be combined with visualization to become an effective tool for releasing stress.
Breathe through your mouth slowly and close your eyes. Imagine that you are in a very relaxing place all the while you are still breathing slowly.
