Why We Need to Reduce Our Stress

stress relief techniques are not just a way to be able to cope with difficult situations without flying off the handle (though that is something you want to avoid!). Techniques to relieve stress also provide us with many more benefits to our health and well being that should start to make you think that being stress free is all important!

Some of the benefits of stress reduction include:

  • Lower blood pressure leading to less heart related conditions
  • Better sleeping patterns which help boost the immune system
  • Decrease in the stress hormone cortisol which causes hormonal imbalance and hurts the immune system
  • Less chance of developing mental disorders such as anxiety and depression
  • Increased ability to concentrate and apply yourself

So who would not want to have less stress if you could have all these benefits? Lets see how you can get these things and more ...

5 Stress Relief Techniques

Deep Breathing

Breathing exercises are a good, quick way to do stress relief management. You can reduce stress by breathing out more than you feel you are breathing in so that you can de-oxygenate your blood which in turn lowers your heart rate. This is important when you feel stressed out because your heart beats faster and you tend to unconsciously breath faster.

Exercise

Exercise is not just for losing weight or gaining muscle it also helps keep you generally healthy and plays an important part in lowering stress levels. You do not need to become a gym junkie either, just 20-30 minutes a day will help you boost your immune system and lower stress via elimination of the stress hormones that cause your body to become sick and add to your worry.

It also releases another hormone called endorphins which make you feel good, confident and less stressed. A good way to release endorphins quickly is to do short intense exercise for just 15 minutes like running up and down stairs. Once you get worked up a bit you will feel the benefits a short time later.

Yoga

While this is not intense exercise for the most part yoga combines a lot of very good relaxation techniques as well as exercise and breathing making it a very good way to reduce stress. You do not even need to get into the more spiritual side of yoga, just the exercises and way you exercise is an excellent stress relief technique.

Meditation

This may not be for everyone but stress relief meditation works for many people to help relieve stress. If done regularly meditation can help you get a clearer mind and a sense of peace. This might seem like a stop gap measure but it does allow you to deal with stress better throughout the day. IT has also been shown to physiologically reduce the symptoms of stress.

Living in the NOW

This is a tip that helped me a great deal. Worrying about everything: the future, work, kids, love and everything tomorrow and everything that has past is a poison on your soul. You should of course make plans and be aware of all these things but if you learn to enjoy life as it is right NOW and not be hung up on things you cannot change you will find yourself a happier and less stressed person.

It is not as easy as flicking a switch in your brain but it can be worked towards and when you get there you will find all those things turn out ok anyway because you are healthier, less stress about doing them and can concentrate on your tasks at hand much better!

Beyond Stress Relief to Stress Elimination

Stress relief techniques only go so far though because there are deeper causes to your stress which I touched on in the last tip. Everyone has certain behaviors and routines that cause problems without you even recognizing it!

I once suffered from these things and lived a life of worry and stress till i found a way out of this pit of negativity. The end result is that I now live a better and happier and healthier life with my two sons who have never seen their old dad like this (but highly approve) and I am finally enjoying my work instead of feeling crushed and suffocated by it.
