Managing Stress
We all need a certain level of stress to perform well in life. That type of stress is called eustress and it allows us to feel alert and focused when we're doing something we find exciting such as skiing fast downhill.
There is also the opposite type of stress, distress, which is one that we're all familiar with. When we're late for a meeting, the traffics at a standstill and we think our jobs on the line we experience a similar reaction to those of our caveman ancestors when facing a wild animal that might kill or maim them.
While most of us no longer face such a threat from wild animals we still react to stressful situations in our lives with the same physical responces. Our bodies release chemicals to help us gear up for the challenge that we're facing and it's those chemicals that cause the damage. They can affect our mood, relationships, productivity and even our health.
In this lens we're going to look at how we can best manage stress in different situations.

Debt Problems
At any time money stress can be debilitating but when there's an economic downturn debt problems are even worse. Debt stress can be one of the most severe kinds of stress because it's constantly on your mind. The most important thing is to realise that the problems won't go away so they need to be faced. It's understandable that if you're in the position of not being able to pay your bills you feel stressed and possibly even embarrassed but the companies actually want to help you.Any company that has a customer who can't meet their repayments would rather know about. If they send letters and make phone calls and don't get a response they assume the customer doesn't want to pay rather can't afford to pay. So if you find yourself in that situation the best thing to do is contact the company and explain your situation. Most of the time they will be happy to work with you to restructure payments or even allow a payment holiday until you're in a position to resume payments.
You should also consider contacting one of the government agencies or charities that are specifically set up to help people in debt. They are staffed by people who are specially trained to help and they do understand how people feel when they're caught up in debt.

Stress Busting At Work
Experiencing stress at work can be extremely difficult because we can often feel trapped. If we're not able to quit the job for whatever reason and knowing that we face going back day after day can cause our stress levels to rocket and have a major impact on all aspects of our lives and cause serious health issues for us.If you're in a situation where you're feeling stressed because of a colleague or co-worker then try to find the source of the conflict and reach a compromise with that individual. They may not even be aware that their behaviour is a source of anxiety for you. Often a situation that has built up can be swiftly defused with just one conversation.
Should the person involved not change their behaviour or if you don't feel able to approach them directly you should speak to your direct line manager. Wait until you're feeling calm (or at least calmer) so you can explain clearly what your colleague is doing and the difficulties it's causing for you. If the situation has already had a major impact on your life you could also ask your union for help and request they attend the meeting with your manager.
From time to time the problem may lie with your manager and you might well feel unable to face them with their behaviour. If that's the problem you should approach Human Resources or Personnel dept with your grievance. Again you should do this when you're feeling in your best frame of mind to allow you to cover every aspect of the problem.

Study Stress
While many people think that being a student is a life of fun and partying it can be a time of great stress to a lot of students. Coping with living away from home for the first time combined with examination stress can lead to stress levels comparable with any job. It's important that you take a holistic approach to the anxiety you're feeling. That means that you should not just consider the course and/or exams you're facing but you should maintain a good network of friends, get plenty of sleep (yes, I know you've eight nights of partying a week to fit in), eat foods that will help you cope and cut out or at least reduce the booze. Plan ning your work load can work wonders and if you're struggling with how to do that speak to your tutor. They're there to help with that kind of thing just as much as they are there to help you learn. And they want to help that's why they went into the job!
Any college or university is well versed in the pressure it's students face and they have great teams of specially trained people to help you through the tough times. Speak to Student Services and they will happily sort out an appointment for you to speak to some in private.
Learning to cope with stress is something that will stand you in good stead once you leave academia and is skill which is as important, if not more important, than any other so it's well learning how.
Quick Tip #3
Don't be afraid to let your emotions surface.
If you're so stressed that you want to cry, then let those tears flow. Built up stress has to come out somehow, so it's a lot safer to let it out through tears than to wait until it explodes into uncontrollable anger.

Repeat this three or four times and you will soon begin to feel much calmer.
