Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - a silent killer

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is anxiety disorder caused by traumatic event, such as: war, grief, crash etc. Sufferers who experience PTSD will remind those events in the future.

Next time, these experiences will influence sufferers and cause: phobia, inability feeling or hatred. PTSD is usually similar to nightmare or flash back, so sufferer will avoid any events that remind them to trauma.

Acute stress is similar to PTSD, but it will be arising for four weeks after traumatic events have happened. However, it is happening as long as two to four weeks.

PTSD is signed by reminding of traumatic event which disturbs or shocks sufferer's psychics. Many events that cause PTSD are similar to the acute stress including: an event related to war, physical and sexual violence or disaster, either natural or human made.

Sometimes, PTSD's symptoms aren't appearing for few months or years after traumatic events have happened. If Post Traumatic Stress syndrome was appearing during three months or more, it's considered as chronic stress.

Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorders

Sometimes, a traumatic event repeats as like as flash back. Great disorders frequently occur when sufferer is re-facing similar traumatic event. As example: reconstruction or autopsy done by policeman can cause traumatic memory of sufferer.

Sufferer will continuously avoid events that remind him to trauma. He doesn't only try to not think, feel and speak about traumatic event; but also avoid any activities, events or people who can remind him about trauma.

Avoiding of any activities includes: amnesia to the specific aspect of traumatic event, insensibility to the emotional response and others (such as: sleepless or easy to shock).

Actually, depression is a common symptom of PTSD. Sufferer will not respect or only have little attractiveness to the previous event.

What is self medication?

Self medication is WHO's recommendation in the education and improvement of the people health quality, which has an aim to make a better life in the future.

Self medication is an effort of patient in the illness treatment by using pharmacotherapy or non pharmacotherapy through rational and accountable methods.

Self medication done by patient him/herself is the early treatment which can totally recover or, at least, reduce illness. It may also be a further treatment that has a function as a support therapy of the main therapy given by doctors.

Steps in the self medication for PTSD are:

  1. #1 Learning disorder and medication by study

#3 Evaluate PTSD progress

After doing many steps above, the next important thing is to evaluate PTSD progress. It's a "successful benchmark" of self medication you have done. The main sign of successful PTSD treatment is that sufferer shows better behavior and already to do daily activities. For the first time, sufferer must be controlled and monitored by care giver.

It can also be done through consulting to psychiatry who will test the progress of PTSD and recommend the next steps to overcome PTSD.
