Understand and manage the stress in your life

What troubles you now?

Are you troubled by the global crises? I know some businesses just closed. My clients have just decided to put on hold their seminars.  They said that some of their clients don't get their services anymore. They must wait and see.

Are you troubled by the prospect that you will not stay in your job for long? Your boss just fired your best friend in the office. Who do you think is next? You pray that it will not be you.

Are you troubled by our government leaders? You are now sick and tired of the political intramurals of our leaders. Manny Villar wants Pacquiao to become a congressman. Not really a bad thing. Not that you care; it is just sometimes hard to accept that people may vote for the popular rather than the capable.

So, really, what troubles you?

I facilitate my  Stress for Success workshops in one day. I can write every detail of the seminar here, but I doubt if you will stay that long. That will surely be stressful. Your laptop monitor will not be able to handle too much stress.

I am thinking of a mini-workshop for you. I like you to leave this place with the firm belief that you can live and work with confidence. At the end of this mini-workshop, I expect you to

  1. understand the importance of stress in your life.
  2. be able to manage the stresses in your life.
  3. utilize stress to attain success

Pretty simple right?

I believe that this mini-workshop can make a small difference in your life.

Do you want to hold your own stress management workshop?

I have been facilitating Stress for Success workshops in the Philippines. I am not a doctor, so you will not get any medical advice from me. My workshops are based on the principle that people can live the life that they want. Participants are given opportunities to examine their lifestyle then explore strategies that can help them enjoy work, life, friends, and family. If you are interested to bring these workshops to your organization today, feel free to contact me. Let us see what I can do for you.

Its not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.
- Hans Selye”

Are you stretchable?

Understanding Stress in Your Life

Hans Selye's words are instructive. It is not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it. Stress is not something that you must strive to eliminate from your life, like smoking for example. Stress, like oxygen, is important to your life. Without stress, you will not be able to perform at your best. Have you imagined an NBA championship game played in the most relaxed, stress free manner? Or having sex without stress? To wish for no stress at all is to wish for no action is to wish for no life. Is to wish for death.

Come on Jef, do you really want stress? I will give you a big YES. What is wrong is not stress, it is how we manage it. I will not complain about having too oxygen in earth's atmosphere, just don't put everything into my lungs. I will complain about water, just don't make me swim inside my room while the flood brings my house into the raging Pasig river. Am I making sense to you. There is nothing wrong with water as long as you can put it in a dam, bring it to people's houses, and even create electricity out of its dynamic power. In the same token, there is nothing wrong with stress as long as we can use it to make the most of our living moment.

I know that Roger Federer experiences more stress than I do watching him playing against Nadal. I know that Michael Jackson experiences more stress dancing on stage than me jumping out here adoring his every move. I know that Olympics champions, peak performers in sports and in business, experience stresses beyond what I do experience everyday. I know also that losers want to get rid of stress in their lives because they are not ready for it. I am not a loser. This is why I welcome stress in my life. Stress makes a champion. I am a champion. So are you.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is your body's response to any physical or emotional changes in your life. This response includes the release of a hormone, adrenaline, in the body. Adrenaline causes an increase in heart rate, breathing and in blood sugar levels. It also diverts the blood flow from your digestive system to your muscles (e.g. leg muscles). Simply put, stress is in our nature.

Stand.

Walk.

Run.

Jump.

You have just experienced stress. Your response to my instruction just made you feel more alert, isn't it? We all experience stress as we cope with daily events. Daily demands as rules, responsibilities, decisions, changes, relationships, illness, money, and thinking, sleeping, can cause stresss. Stress can give your life some spice and excitement. Positive stress, Eustress, (please shout, Eustress!) helps you to cope with problems that might arise.

On the other hand, living under very stressful conditions for long periods of time, may harm your health, your relationships, and your enjoyment of life.

Stress means stretch. When I think of something that can be stretched I think of rubber bands. So let me use the rubberband as analogy for stress management in this mini-worshop. I suggest you look for a rubberband before we continue. I usually distribute rubber bands to my workshop participants during the workshop. We understand better when we can use something familiar to explain that which is unfamiliar.

We are all like rubber bands. We function when we are stretched. And just like rubber bands we come in different colors, sizes, shapes, and thickness. I am not sure if colors have something to do with the strengths of rubber band but I know that sizes, shapes, and thickness do contribute to the strengths of rubber bands.

Now people, the rubber bands, reacts and copes with situations differently and thus we experience stress to different levels of intensity. Weak rubber bands break easily. Strong rubber bands, well, are simply stretched. This is why some people go insane over trivial matters, over nonproblems. And this is also why some people can stay sober and alert even in the most difficult situations like war.

Later on I will discuss a technology that can help you get transform the stresses into successes. So, start stretching your rubber bands now. Something good is going to happen.

Quick Notes on Stress

Some concepts you ought to know

  1. Again, stress is an interactive process, between person and environment. It occurs as an individual adapts to the demand(s) placed on him or her. Much like a rubber band really!
  2. Stress involves both external sources of pressure and internal responses to stressors. Your stressors can be my enjoyment. Some people don't like walking but there are those who even runs every day and they enjoy doing running.
  3. Stress is natural and necessary. Absence of stress is death. So, please stop wishing for the absence of stress. You will not like it happening today.
  4. Any change, whether positive or negative, creates stress. The question is how you will react to it. Take a lollipop from a child the the child might cry. Now, what happens to you if a child takes your lollipop away from you? Are you stressed? Most likely. But I am not sure whether you are laughing or angry.
  5. Stress and illness (both physical and psychological) are related. Yes, scientific research have shown that modern illness have something to do with bad stress. And happiness with good stress. Laughter, good stress, is the best medicine.
  6. Stress is perceptual. Individuals respond differently to the same stressors. When was the last time you felt good looking at the mirror?
  7. Here is another analogy. The body's ability to contain stress is much like a rain barrel, which overflows when the water reaches the top. Too many stressors create overload and burnout. We need to create a plug in the barrel through learning and practicing effective coping strategies. These will enable us to control our stress so we can maintain a manageable level.

Some words from Leonardo

Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen. - Leonardo Da Vinci

DEAL wisely the STRESS in your life

You can create a new life and you can make the life of people around you happier

I like to share with you four simple steps that you can use as you deal with stress. Get your paper and write the steps. You can also get a notebook. It is good for your memory to write down whatever you are going to learn next than to simply print this out. So, let us spell how to DEAL with your stress.

Decide to live your ideal life.
Examine your present life.
Arm yourself with tried and tested strategies.
Liberate yourself and the people around you.

I encourage you to record your actions for each of the step

Decide to Live Your Ideal Life

And you will live with confidence

What is your most ideal day? Do you know exactly how you want to live your life for the next five days, five weeks, five months, and five years? When was the last best day of your life? When is the next?

The best day of our lives is today. The past is no longer here. We cannot enjoy it any longer. To dwell on the past to waste the opportunity to enjoy the present. The future is a promise, a time that will not come because what we have is only today. When tomorrow comes, it will not be tomorrow anymore, it becomes your today. Sounds philosophical huh? But I am not trying to sound philosophical. You cannot enjoy tomorrow unless you know how to enjoy your today.

If you were live to thirty more years, you are going to experience 10,957 todays. Given that you have that many more days to live, it is easy to waste time. But everyday that passed without your notice is day cut off from your life. Your life is a day shorter every new day.

How many of these days will be given to building relationship with your family, friends, co-workers, and the people around you? How many of these days will be invested to learning new things, to increasing your value in the society, to making a difference in the world of one or one million? How many of these days will be spent for knowing yourself and your God? And how many of these 10, 957 days do you intend to spend with worry, anger, fear, and frustration?

One favorite Bible verse say, "Lord teach us to number our days that we may gain the heart of wisdom". And what wisdom have I learned from that verse?

Each day is a decision.

Whatever we do today is our decision. When I decided to speak with you, I have also decided not to do other things. I have chosen to be with you today. And you have chosen to be here today. You are spending one hour of your very valuable day with me. Some people plan for the future as if the future is something that you can reach by following a straight line. No, every moment is a moment of decision. There are moments that we make bigger decisions, but we only reach these bigger decisions because of the small decisions we made before.

Some people cry when they stumble. Others laugh. And there are those who pretend that nothing happened. Each action is a decision.

Do you know of people who are always late? Have you realized that these are also the same people who blame the traffic, the drivers, and the weather? Have you realized that these are the same people who complain a lot? And yes, the same people who find their days very toxic? Being late in the workplace is a decision.

Avoid the complainers. They are making their lives stressful and miserable. And they want you to feel the same. You need to accept that the way you spend your days and live your life is your responsibility. Each day is a decision. And you are the decision maker.

Each day is a decision to live.

Today is a gift; it is called Present. How you use this day is up to you. At each new day, you decided whether to unwrapped that gift, or let it stay in the corner and spoil. There are people who exist but do not live. They wake up each morning not knowing what to do. Ask them why they go to school, and they will be surprised by you asking that question. They say that's what you are supposed to do to have a good job. Ask them why they go to work, and they say because everyone goes to work. So, they go to work, spending a portion of their valuable days for work they don't want to do, with people whom they don't want to see, for a place they don't want to stay. And then they complain about being stressed. So, they attend stress management seminars and learn stress management techniques for a day. Go back to work expecting to be able to handle the stressors in the workplace. And being stressed further because they will find out that techniques do not work.

Stress for those who do not know why they live is suicide in slow motion. Stress for those who live with purpose serves a good purpose.

Each day is a decision to live your ideal life.

One great tragedy of our generation is that most people do not even pause to think about life, much more of ideal life. Deep within you is the desire to live an ideal life. Again, how do you intend to live each day of your life? What are the things which are important to you?

Another favorite bible verse says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all of these things will be given unto you." This is my guide. Every day is opportunity to seek my real purpose. To live my purpose is my ideal life. Every day is a chance to live an ideal life.

I think one of my purposes is to inspire people. I only have 24 hours each day just like that you only have 24 hours each day. Shall I spend my 24 with any of the following:

  • Blaming the government for all the ills of the society,

  • Reading newspapers which sells violence and sex,

  • Watch TV shows like that steals productive time,

  • Being angry with greedy thick skinned politicians who smile like angels (of death?),

  • Worry about clients who postponed my seminars to next year,

  • Doing nothing at home

I believe that worry and frustrations have no place in my ideal life. To truly live my purpose, I must do everything that will realize my purpose each new day. It does not take ten seconds to decide. How about you, how do you like to spend your next hour? Will it help you realize your purpose?

Seek God's purpose in your life. In every action that you need to do on a day will be clear to you. Yes, all of the things that you desire will given to you for you will only desire that which is connected to your purpose. No, things will not be easy, but things will be clear to you. And when things are clear to us, when we can see the horizon clearly, then we can walk with confidence.

You may still worry about your boss getting angry with you. But then again, you will realize that worrying won't help solve a problem. And who says that you have to be affected by your bosses anger. You may not be able to make the day of your boss any better on that day (of course, you can always try), but you don't need to ruin your day either.

You may still worry about angry and difficult clients. There are those who call you names. But wait, you are in control! This client is just one of the many souls you will meet on this day, or in your lifetime. Your role for today is to help this customer solve his problem. You cannot allow him to ruin your day ( and that is not really his purpose).

You sleep late. You love watching that TV show until the wee hours. I don't have to counsel you. But as for me, I know that sleeping very late will not really help me. First, there is really no TV show or Night party which is more important that doing the things that I love doing. Second, I spend a lot of energy when I sleep late. I wake up late and start late and oftentimes not productive. So, why waste the opportunity to be at my best for something that will not really add a minute to my life, to my self-esteem, or even my value to this world.

I challenge you to be clear about your purposes in life. Decide to live your ideal life.

Examine your life

Something worth fixing is something worth examining well...

Aristotle said that "the unexamined life is not worth living". I think that is an exaggeration. Life is always worth living. But I can see his point. Someone who does not know that reason for living may not find it more enjoyable, or worth living. This is why I asked you first to look into your ideal life. Your life is getting shorter, and I do not want you to be stressed about that. I simply invite you to take this into perspective when you are stressed about trivial matters. You cannot make yourself more important and enjoyable by spending on things which will not either a minute to your life, or even a significance to whatever you are doing now.

I will not be engaging you into a philosophical discussion. This is not the right forum for that. You are here to learn how to manage the stresses in your life and I am willing to share with you whatever I know. Here is what you can do next: Examine your life.

Okay, examining your life may be a very big task. Let's do something workable today. Let's examine the stresses in our lives.
1. Identify the stressors in your life
2. Evaluate your coping mechanism.

Stressors are those events or situations which cause one to feel stressed. Pressures, conflicts, and frustrations are some categories of stressors. We all have our unique way of responding to stressors in our lives. Not the stressors, but our reaction to stressors, determine the results we get. All of us, as long as we live, have stressors. It is important that we identify our top stressors for these affect the way we live. Below are some stressors which workshop participants shared.

1. Identify the stressors in your life. I encourage to sit down for fifteen minutes and write down the top 15 stressors in your life at work, home, church, etc. You can list 20, 30, 50, or 100 if you really have that many stressors in your life. Some of the stressors are obvious, and some are not. So, give some thoughts to this activity. Remember that you want to start a new life, and you want to live your ideal life.

I have asked you to identify your stressors and ranked them because you must know that there are stressors which do not deserve much of our attention. When I was still younger, for example, I was easily stressed about the news I read every day. Many politicians and my country are liars, just like many politicians around the world. I was stressed about heavy traffic congestions. I was stressed by my students not doing their assignments and not reading their books.

But then, these are stressors which are beyond my control. The politicians in my country will still do their ugly activities whether I am stressed or not. The traffic situation in Metro Manila will remain the same and it will not change simply because I am stressed about it. My students who did not do their assignments and read their books - I thought I could do something about them. They are within my area of influence.

When you have identified your stressors, you must have found out that some of these stressors are sucking life out of your day unnecessarily. We are spending much time about these stressors which do not add up a minute to our lives or significance to what we do.

Also, I want you also to consider that there are stressors in our lives which are necessary for us to live a much better life. Of course, deadlines and quotas are stressors. But they are also encouragement for all of us create better results. I have listed below some stressors. Try to add yours too.

2. Evaluate your coping mechanism

Now that you have already identified the stressors in your life, it is important to evaluate how you respond to the stressors in your life. Just like what I have said earlier, people respond differently to stressors. You can think of the diagram this way:

Stressors ---> Your assessment of the stressors ---> what you brains tell you (fight or flight) ---> Your Physical response

Let me give you some examples.

1. Public Speaking. (Stressor)
a. There are people who see public speaking as a threat (assessment). And there are many reasons for that. Some just do not know what to say. Others have very low self esteem. There are those who fear that they will just bore the audience for they don't have any idea or experience in public speaking. Given these assessment, the typical tendency of people is to avoid (flight) public speaking and make every excuses not too. They are not comfortable with situations where they might be asked to speak. So you see, most people during seminars do not take the front seats for fear that they might be called to participate. For most people, public speaking cause distress (bad stress). Aside from the sweaty palms and all (physical response) the mere fact that they are tasked to speak will give these people sleepless nights. They don't feel good about themselves, and sometimes about the people around them.

b. There are those who see public speaking as an opportunity (assessment). And there are many reasons for that. Maybe they are salespeople who need more time be speak before their prospects. Or maybe they are preachers or politicians with idea to sell. Their central nervous system also asked them for their response (flight or fight). These are new crowds. And sometimes hostile crowd. Think of a Christian missionary in a Muslim country or vice versa. And most often, they fight. They speak before this people.

Before I proceed with the next example, I want you to know that both response will cause the same stress to the person speaking. As a public speaker, I experienced nervousness all the time. Please understand that being nervous and being anxious are two different things. It is natural to be nervous. Anxiety is your invention.

In both response, you are consuming energy. Avoiding public speaking (flight) sometimes consumed more energy than delivering (fight) a very dynamic presentation. This is because although they "fight", they also flow with the energy. Remember, stressors are situations that tell your brain (the subconscious) that you are going perform. Therefore your brain deploy your energies to wherever it is needed.

I am not saying that fighting is always a better option. There are situations where avoidance is a better option.

2. A stranger challenge you to a fist-fight. (stressor)

a. Macho men out there think that it is not okay to say no (assessment). They feel the surge of energy from their heart (now beating faster) going to their thighs, arms, and fist. Don't blink for most of the times, they'll choose to fight and that challenger will taste the fury of his fist even before you blink your eyes.

b. There are guys like me (they sometimes call cowards) who are reasonable. Having been to many fights before, I think it is stupidity to hurt someone simply because he asked for it (assessment), so I retreat and ignore this guy.
This example look easy of course. But out there, people do not avoid fights, especially domestic fights when avoidance is a better option.

3. A customer is angry and she is looking for you. (stressor)

a. There are people who will think that the customer is not worth the time (assessment) so they'll just avoid (flight) them. Of course, it is okay for some people if the customer will not come back anymore. But they always do.

b. There are people who think that they must confront the customer (assessment). The customer has no right to be angry and this make them angry too (initial response- fight!)

c. There are those who think that the customer deserves listening ears (assessment) that they choose to face the customer (fight) and find opportunities to help him solve his problems.

There are many ways of tackling the stressors in your life. Evaluate the stressors in your life. I have realized that there are coping mechanisms which cause more harm than good.

There are those who think that credit cards are ready solutions to financial woes. But you must heard of people who now have more problems because they were not able to manage their use of their credit cards.

Smoking help people concentrate. I know of some people who can write and think well when they are smoking. I don't and many thanks to that fact. In the long term, smoking does not only kill your lungs. It will eventually cause emotionally trauma to your family. You only need to ask those whose mother or father was killed by lung cancer.

Saying yes to every demand seemed to be very logical when you are a subordinate. But research also shows that too much work load will eventually make you inefficient. You cannot be very good at doing the most important jobs if you keep yourself busy doing the small jobs which you don't even have to do. Most people are stressed because they do not know how to say no. Every time you say YES to a boss or a friend or anybody, they actually think that you can do that. Don't be too hard on yourself. Learn to say no so that you can say YES to the most important things to in life.

Apply Stress Management Tools

Much of the talk about stress has something to do with bad stress. This is also one of the reasons why many people think of stress as something that we need to get rid of. But as I have mentioned above, stress is essential to life. The best step is to reduce and if possible eliminate those situations which develop distress ( bad stress) and focus our attention on eustress (good stress).

Below are various strategies you can use to expand your stress management strategies. I invite you to add your tips too.

What We Can Do to Manage Stress

Your Stress Busters

Some people have a negative way of coping. They take drugs, consume excessive alcohol, smoke, binge on food and injure themselves. These only mask the stress they feel, harm their health and even cause emotional and financial burden to their family.

We would not be able to get rid of stress altogether, but we can manage it at a level that we can handle. The stress busters, in the following pages, tell you some positive ways to cope with stress.
