Job Stress Affecting Performance of Workers Globally

When corporations and organizations around the world began uncovering connections between the levels of stress a worker had and the instances of poor health, they began working toward a better solution.
 
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been preparing companies to combat the effects of stress in the workplace through education and awareness training.
 
It came to the forefront of government concerns when more workers complained of aches, pains, sleeplessness, decrease in appetite and utter exhaustion.  The higher the stress level, the more a worker's health is at risk.
 
Some companies have begun hiring counselors at the workplace, while others offer stress management classes.  But many workers need to go one step further and learn self stress reduction techniques they can apply instantly whenever necessary.
 
Just about everyone admits they have a certain amount of stress in the workplace.  It's common in America, the UK, and countries around the globe.  According to Northwester National Life, a full quarter of employees list their job as the #1 stressor in their lives.
 
Fortunately, research on job stress has greatly expanded in recent years. But in spite of this attention, confusion remains about the causes, effects, and prevention of job stress. This booklet summarizes what is known about job stress and what can be done about it.

Stress in the Workplace 

You may think it's just the workload that makes a person stress out, but in reality, it's much more than that.

The conditions of the workplace as a whole affect employees more than just their overall task list.


The people they're working with, such as co-workers and management teams, can have a direct effect on stress levels. When stress levels rise, job performance suffers, and the worker is then subjected to ridicule and scolding from their superior.

Demands of a job can also put undue stress on a worker, such as added responsibility they're not compensated for, longer than usual work hours, and few, if any, breaks scheduled throughout the day.
When workers begin suffering from repeated stress, their health suffers.

 

The body prepares for the situation ahead of time, releasing hormones in defense of the stress. Muscles get tense, the pulse quickens and blood pressure rises.

When it's constantly stressed, the body will begin breaking down due to fatigue and disease where the immune system is no longer capable of fending off foreign invaders.

Not only is a person's mood soured, but they begin experiencing headaches, stomach pains, and chronic disease that can't be explained away by anything else.

The psychological factors of stress take their toll on the employee's body until he or she begins missing work or avoiding it subconsciously.

Over time, the damage becomes serious - because stress affects your cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.

The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine reports that healthcare costs skyrocket by a whopping 50% for high-stress workers.

Removing Workplace Stress Requires a Two-Pronged Approach 

In order to create a stress-free atmosphere, or at least one that isn't contributing to the demise of your health, it will require a combination of solutions. The first is organizational change.

You can contact upper management and have them address the issue using consultants who work on improving working conditions. If more breaks are needed, or responsibilities need to be shared, then those in senior positions need to help their employees achieve a better working environment.

But the second thing that must be done is you have to learn how to deal with the stress on your own. Stress management techniques are plentiful - you only need to find one that works for you.

Some companies have employee assistance programs where they help you find the stress management solutions you need. But you may be on your own. If this is the case, test a few different methods, such as self-hypnosis, Reiki, or meditation.

You will probably begin seeing a rapid decrease in the amount of stress you live with. Knowing how to manage it helps you instantly apply those methods whenever a situation arises where you feel anxious and tense.
