Chronic Workplace Stress Leads to Heart Health Woes

For people who suffer workplace stress, heart health may not be a pressing issue. That is, until they suffer physical symptoms that require them to dash to a doctor's office in search of a solution.

Stress Diet and Your Heart:
A Lifetime Program for Healing Your Heart Without Drugs or Surgery

When a man or woman is exposed to chronic workplace stress, it puts a deep strain on their heart's ability to function. According to a Canadian study, if you've ever suffered a heart attack, workplace stress will ensure you double your chances to have another one.

If you're already experiencing heart problems and you can link it to the stress you feel in the workplace, then you need to take immediate action to reduce the amount of workplace stress that you encounter so that you stay healthy for a long time to come.

What constitutes workplace stress? We all have it to some degree, even if you're in the career of your choice making the kind of money you'd always dreamed about. Chronic workplace stress is what makes the difference, because at no point in your career are you happy about how your job is unfolding.

This strain that you feel mentally has a direct effect on your health, and in particular, your heart. You might feel an uneasiness that evolves into angina, or pain in your chest. The higher the demands that are placed on you, the worse your on the job stress becomes.

What Causes Stress in the Workplace?

Transforming Stress:
The Heartmath Solution For Relieving Worry, Fatigue, And Tension

What doesn't? It seems everyone can point out factors that contribute to their stress load during the workday. It might be something as simple as a coworker forgetting to put on a new pot of coffee or it could be that every time you clear your email inbox, you open it up to find 300 new emails to respond to.

Money is a big factor in workplace stress. If you're being underpaid and have tried to find a solution but the boss won't budge, then you might feel a constant resentment toward your working environment and the office stress becomes unbearable.

If you have a good inner office social support system, it can help lessen the load of your workplace stress, but many office workers have no one to turn to, isolated in a cubicle without time to interact about what's bothering them.

Even self employed entrepreneurs suffer workplace stress - and that can be because of the isolating factors, the burden of having to do it all yourself, or the mere knowledge that everything you do could be responsible for making or breaking the entire business!

First Steps if Workplace Stress Is Affecting Your Heart Health

The first thing you should do is pinpoint the cause of your workplace stress. You can't fix it if you've closed your eyes to the problem. Secondly, you need to address the matter rather than letting the problem fester and boil beneath the surface.

Mind Your Heart:
A Mind/Body Approach to Stress Management, Exercise, and Nutrition for Heart Health

We now work more hours than ever before. If time is a crucial factor in your stress, then you need to find a way to cut back on your hours. That doesn't mean asking for an increase in pay because you still haven't solved the time factor.

If pay is a problem, then you have choices to make. Learn about how to ask your boss for a raise. Perform to the very best f your abilities so that you feel confident asking for one. And if you don't get the results you want, consider making a career or corporation change - your very health may depend on your ability to be bold and brave here!

Co-worker issues should never be a matter that you take into your own hands. This is something for upper management to resolve, even if it's something as small as someone over-doing it on the perfume, giving you chronic headaches.

If your manager won't address the issue, then you need to know your legal rights. Don't ignore the situation and call out sick to work just to avoid an encounter. If working conditions are unbearable, an attorney may be able to get the remedy you deserve if your company won't go to bat for you.

If your workplace stress is starting to grow and you're showing signs and symptoms of this, it's time to take action. Don't wait until it gets to the point that you're awaiting doctor's test results on the state of your heart because by then, the damage may be irreversible.

The Cost of Stress in the Workplace Is More Than Just Productivity

Workplace stress is the harmful physical and emotional response that occurs when there is a poor match between job demands and the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.

Stress-related disorders encompass a broad array of conditions, including psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder) and other types of emotional strain (e.g., dissatisfaction, fatigue, tension, etc.), maladaptive behaviors (e.g., aggression, substance abuse), and cognitive impairment (e.g., concentration and memory problems). In turn, these conditions may lead to poor work performance or even injury. Job stress is also associated with various biological reactions that may lead ultimately to compromised health, such as cardiovascular disease.

Hi
A great lens on a very important issue. Well done. It gets my top stars

Excellent information. A common daily thread among workers in my company seems to be a sense of under-appreciation and undervalue. I hear such complaints daily. The constant undercurrent of dissatisfaction is a huge stressor. Most of us love our company and give it everything we have, despite any sense of not being fully appreciated for our contributions. To alleviate the stress, and keep my own spirits high, I give myself at least one ten minute meditation a day. Also, when it seems needed, I give a coworker time to spout. Listening with attention is always a good thing.
