What are stretch marks?
Stretch Marks or Striae are a skin condition which is caused by overstretching of skin. The middle layer of skin called dermis is stretches to its limits where its elasticity breaks down. Tissues are inflamed and microscopic bleeding starts which is visible in the form of reddish purple colored scars on the outer skin. When the dermis is healed the outer skins is left with these scars which turn silver white, a few shades lighter than your normal skin color. We call these scars stretch marks.
When are stretch marks formed?
Sudden weight gains caused by several reasons like puberty, pregnancy, obesity or body building, are the main reasons of stretch marks formation. Skin has to accommodate the extra weight or mass gained in very short period. Stretch marks are not harmful but are a major cosmetic concern especially for women. Usually these marks are formed in adolescents who undergo very rapid physical changes.
How can we prevent stretch marks?
Prevention is better than cure is an age old saying which holds well even today especially while talking about stretch marks prevention. Though it is almost impossible to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy, steps can be taken to minimize it. Stretch marks caused by medical conditions other than pregnancy can be cured easily. Eating healthy diet and drinking as much water as possible go a long way in preventing stretch marks. Some exercises are also known to be highly effective in preventing stretch marks.
