Do you know someone or have you had a Stroke after visiting a Chiropractor?

In the early morning hours of a cold day in November of last year, I woke up to use the bathroom and promptly fell to the floor, waking my wife. Several hours later, doctors were explaining details of the stroke I had in my sleep.

I could not speak or move anything on the right half of my body and I was very frustrated because no one could tell me what caused the brain attack or what to expect for the future. I was not in the best shape in the world but, still, I didn't expect this at the age of 42.

It is almost a year later and I am very fortunate to have had a remarkable recovery. I can speak and get around fairly well and, if someone didn't tell, you would probably have a hard time knowing that there was anything wrong with me.

I am very thankful to God that, with a lot of hard work and some very good doctors and therapists, I am able to live at the level I do-- going back to work and doing most everything I did before, albeit not as well as I did.

I did a lot of research on my condition during my recovery and, in the Spring, stumbled upon a study claiming that people, under the age of 50, that had been receiving chiropractic treatment, specifically neck adjustments, were 8-10 times more likely to have a stroke.

I had been visiting the chiropractor for several months for upper back and neck pain and had a neck adjustment a few days before my event. Could this have had something to do with my stroke? Is that why, after hearing of my condition, I never heard from that doctor's office again?

The purpose of this lens is two-fold.

To collect information from other stroke survivors that had been receiving similar treatment and offer support and understanding to each other and...

To inform individuals considering chiropractic treatment of the possible consequences of some of the procedures.

If you are one of those people or know one, please look into this information and sign our guestbook.

Thanks.

Neck Manipulation: Risk vs. Benefit
While manipulation of any kind has the potential to cause injury, stroke caused by neck manipulation is of greatest concern. Risk must always be weighed against benefit when upper neck manipulation is considered. Risk of stroke caused by neck manipulation is statistically low, but the risk is serious enough to outweigh benefit in all but a few rare, carefully selected cases.
Stroke & spinal manipulation
Extensive research shows that spinal manipulation, the most commonly practiced chiropractic procedure, has limited therapeutic value especially when compared with less costly alternative therapies. Furthermore, there is evidence that chiropractic neck manipulation may damage neck arteries and lead to increased chance of stroke.

How Can You Help Prevent Chiropractic Stroke?

From the good Dr. SJ at Chiropractic is Quackery

How you can help fight Chiropractic Quackery?

Together, we can spread the word!

#1 -- Email this lens to a friend, vote on this lens, or leave comments in our guestbook (below).

#2 -- Post VIDEOS on Youtube.
Until recently, Youtube was totally overrun with chiropractic quackery. This gave a false sense of legitimacy to pseudoscience and put patients and students at risk.

Please continue to post news segments (if you have permission) about injured chiropractic patients, chiropractic student loan defaults, chiropractors getting arrested for fraud advertising, etc.

And if you have video production skills, consider creating a short video. It can even be just a "slideshow" with research, facts, or links to where consumers can go for more information. If you need links to research to back-up what you say, please email me and I will be glad to help.

Your efforts could help prevent someone getting swindled by a chiropractor or even having a stroke from an unnecessary manipulation. Thanks!

What do you think?

Can chiropractic treatment contribute to stroke?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

No-- it must be something else.

Gibley Gibley says:

Typically, you confuse spinal manual therapy performed by medical doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors and physical therapists. The danger does not come from what type of professional performed the procedure, but more likely a predisposing feature a patient has. e.g. weakened vertebral arteries from taking prescribed (but un-necessary) anti-inflammatories. These increase the probability by up to 85%, when taking 150mgs of diclofenic.I chose no, because your statement is maliciously false and ignorant.

Dr Evan Carter says:

strokes are a tragedy, unfortunately you blame the chiropractor for this even when it is far more likely your lifestyle stressors through most of your life is actually the true cause and the manipulation was a trigger of an inevitable event. I know I am a cardiologist and I see it everyday. I also visit a chiropractor and they have done wonders for me and have no issue referring anyone to them of course like any profession there are crap ones but i would never dismiss an entire industry based on one persons claims.

rachel says:

No, i think the person was already predisposed to have the stroke and the adjustment probably encouraged it. There are some poor chiropractors out there that give the rest of them a bad name. Most chiropractors are well trained and actually very effective and safe at what they practice.

Yes! Although it is rare, it is definitely happening.

Grant says:

This is great. Been two years since my VAD and stroke. Not much information out there until now. Seems this is starting to be more and more open to the public. When kids crack their necks at the gym...I cringe and wait for them to stroke out. Any more cases of malpractice?

Liv says:

I can't deny the possibility that a cervical manipulation can cause a stroke in an individual, however I can affirmatively state that the likelihood of a stroke occurring as a result of a chiropractic adjustment is very low. I accept that the article author may have been an unfortunate victim of such an incident, but just as there are risks with anything your Primary Care Physician prescribes, there are risks with chiropractic care. In fact, there is a higher risk of a fatal vehicle accident on the way TO your appointment than there is in experiencing long term negative side effects of a CVA.

I myself am a longstanding chiropractic patient, and was referred to a chiropractor by a pediatrician during my childhood when I was diagnosed with acute scoliosis. During my high school years I continued to see a chiropractor, during which time he and my PCP would collaborate in order to work out the best way to correct/rehabilitate/treat injuries I sustained from sports, a vehicle collision, and a recreational incident. At no point in time was I ever placed on long term medication for pain management or any other health issue.

After graduation, I stopped seeing my chiropractor, but continued with regular checkups with my PCP. 10 years later I'm exhibiting symptoms that are otherwise medically unexplainable, and my PCP asked me to see my chiropractor again. After 6 months of treatment, 2x week with my chiropractor, EVERY SINGLE symptom is gone yet again, and I feel refreshed, energetic, and young, just as I had prior to graduating high school. My PCP confirms that I'm healthy again and I'm no longer on medication to treat high blood pressure anymore.

Perhaps I'm an extreme case, or maybe I'm one of those "miracle" situations where it was just coincidence that a chiropractic regime and resolution of issues happened at the same time. Regardless, I'm a huge advocate of what chiropractic care can do for the body, especially when done in-line with care from your regular physician. Though my adjustments may increase my chance of a stroke (roughly 1 in 1,000,000 chance per adjustment), I'm willing to take that chance because without chiropractic care and a CVA, I KNOW I'm in a hell of a lot worse condition. The only solution would be to not allow the body to get out of ideal shape. Don't input chemicals into your body. Exercise regularly and ensure proper form when doing strength training. Eat healthy. Take time to relax, and get a full night's rest EVERY night. Even in an ideal world, things don't go perfectly; life is a RISK, itself.

Ultimately, I accept the odds for or against me. I'm an advocate for chiropractic care and Cervical Vertebral Adjustments.

Lisa says:

Yes had a stroke last year - dual disection of vertebral arteries. Have seen 6 neurologists so far - all of them said that neck manipulation from chriopractor caused the stroke. Happy to still be here and be able to function. Have met many people since this happened who have had similar. More people need to know about this! I was only 35 and healthy when this happened. It could have been prevented.

FlaminCatDesigns says:

My husband had a few discs damaged in his neck from a car accident. His doctor warned him to not use a chiropractor for his injury. People were almost angry at him saying, no I will not use a chiropractor. I am thankful he did not use one.

JC says:

Studies prove that people who have strokes after a chiropractic visit would of had a stroke anyway. You are just as likely to have a stroke while backing out of the driveway, getting your hair washed at a salon or sitting in your MD office.

As a Chiropractor I want to thank you for providing a forum of discussion for such a hot topic. It is terribly unfortunate what you went through and I am happy to hear about your recovery. You have done a lot of research and if you are open to it, I'd like to share some of my knowledge with you. Most of the time it comes down to patient education and the Doctor being able to properly recognize the signs of stroke, it's been proved that Chiropractors are not causing strokes, rather they have mismanaged the instances when patients have presented with a stroke. That's a human error, not a Chiropractic error. This is from an article on my page:
"This scientific study shows that past assumptions attempting to relate chiropractic care with certain types of strokes were not due to the care, but rather to the fact that the people who went to chiropractors and medical doctors with certain types of problems were slightly more likely to suffer this type of problem anyway. Dr. Silver explained, "The association occurs because patients tend to seek care when they're having neck pain or headache, and sometimes they go to a chiropractor, sometimes they go to a physician. But we didn't see an increased likelihood of them having this type of stroke after seeing a chiropractor."

( http://www.squidoo.com/LifeChiropractic) will give you more info.

Looking forward to discussing this with you further.
