Do you know someone or have you had a Stroke after visiting a Chiropractor?

In the early morning hours of a cold day in November of last year, I woke up to use the bathroom and promptly fell to the floor, waking my wife. Several hours later, doctors were explaining details of the stroke I had in my sleep.

I could not speak or move anything on the right half of my body and I was very frustrated because no one could tell me what caused the brain attack or what to expect for the future. I was not in the best shape in the world but, still, I didn't expect this at the age of 42.

It is almost a year later and I am very fortunate to have had a remarkable recovery. I can speak and get around fairly well and, if someone didn't tell, you would probably have a hard time knowing that there was anything wrong with me.

I am very thankful to God that, with a lot of hard work and some very good doctors and therapists, I am able to live at the level I do-- going back to work and doing most everything I did before, albeit not as well as I did.

I did a lot of research on my condition during my recovery and, in the Spring, stumbled upon a study claiming that people, under the age of 50, that had been receiving chiropractic treatment, specifically neck adjustments, were 8-10 times more likely to have a stroke.

I had been visiting the chiropractor for several months for upper back and neck pain and had a neck adjustment a few days before my event. Could this have had something to do with my stroke? Is that why, after hearing of my condition, I never heard from that doctor's office again?

The purpose of this lens is two-fold.

To collect information from other stroke survivors that had been receiving similar treatment and offer support and understanding to each other and...

To inform individuals considering chiropractic treatment of the possible consequences of some of the procedures.

If you are one of those people or know one, please look into this information and sign our guestbook.

Thanks.

Neck Manipulation: Risk vs. Benefit
While manipulation of any kind has the potential to cause injury, stroke caused by neck manipulation is of greatest concern. Risk must always be weighed against benefit when upper neck manipulation is considered. Risk of stroke caused by neck manipulation is statistically low, but the risk is serious enough to outweigh benefit in all but a few rare, carefully selected cases.
Stroke & spinal manipulation
Extensive research shows that spinal manipulation, the most commonly practiced chiropractic procedure, has limited therapeutic value especially when compared with less costly alternative therapies. Furthermore, there is evidence that chiropractic neck manipulation may damage neck arteries and lead to increased chance of stroke.

The quackery of chiropractic
Chiropractic, the "art" of treating a sleuth of medical conditions by manhandling the spine, is up there with homeopathy and reflexology. Except, to my surprise, it isn't innocuous at all. An article in the Skeptics Magazine details the dangers of this true branch of medicinal quackery: Fatal Adjustments: How Chiropractic Kills.

Jill Bolte Taylor: a brain doctor that had a stroke.

How it feels to have a stroke

http://www.ted.com Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.

How Can You Help Prevent Chiropractic Stroke?

From the good Dr. SJ at Chiropractic is Quackery

How you can help fight Chiropractic Quackery?

Together, we can spread the word!

#1 -- Email this lens to a friend, vote on this lens, or leave comments in our guestbook (below).

#2 -- Post VIDEOS on Youtube.
Until recently, Youtube was totally overrun with chiropractic quackery. This gave a false sense of legitimacy to pseudoscience and put patients and students at risk.

Please continue to post news segments (if you have permission) about injured chiropractic patients, chiropractic student loan defaults, chiropractors getting arrested for fraud advertising, etc.

And if you have video production skills, consider creating a short video. It can even be just a "slideshow" with research, facts, or links to where consumers can go for more information. If you need links to research to back-up what you say, please email me and I will be glad to help.

Your efforts could help prevent someone getting swindled by a chiropractor or even having a stroke from an unnecessary manipulation. Thanks!

Notes from Dr. RW: Cervical spine manipulation and stroke
Since there is a large amount of evidence from many reports regarding an association between neurologic damage and cervical manipulation, and because there are no identifiable risk factors, anyone who receives CSMT can be at risk of neurologic damage. It is important for patients to be well informed before undergoing this kind of procedure and for physicians to recognize the early symptoms of this complication so that catastrophic consequences can be avoided.

OK. I think this study was done in 2008: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18195663?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=4&log$=relatedreviews&logdbfrom=pubmed, and states: CONCLUSIONS: Weak to moderately strong evidence exists to support causation between CMT and VAD and associated stroke.

I know there is a lot of information out there-- I have read reports claiming both sides of the story. Have you browsed through the other information on this lens? As far as I can tell, there is a real question about whether or not chiropractic care is safe or effective.

It is not really that much time that I am devoting to this cause. In fact, I wish I could spend more time informing people of the possible risks. I understand that this is the chiropractor's livelihood that we are talking about here... but it was my life that we are talking about.

My lens. I will post what I want. There is plenty of chiropractic organization-funded propaganda out there to counter. I did not publish your last post because I felt it was rude and condescending and you didn't identify yourself with any more than an arrogant "realist". I had a "real" stroke and do not appreciate nor need your false sympathy.

I would suspect, from your persistence, that you are a part of the chiropractic community and have, therefore, been conditioned to not accept any argument that does not put the practice in the best light (which is understandable) but in the interest of fairness I am going to post your comments in an effort to open a forum of discussion. I would ask, however, that you follow a few guidelines:

I am not a doctor, but I am not an idiot either... please don't treat me like one.
No personal attacks on me or any other contributor or their beliefs.
Let us know who you are so we know your agenda.

The contradicting study you cited was 6 years old. The one I used was 1 year old. The vast majority of "research" listed on those chiropractic-induced stroke websites is 10 years old. We want to look to the current literature. This is the only way to progress in academia and get the truth. I know if someone close to me had a stroke, I would look very diligently to determine what caused it, so I do feel for you. I'm sure you don't have an agenda, but I believe that you were misled somewhere along the way by people who do have an anti-chiropractic agenda. I can't understand how you can devote so much time and energy to something you can't possibly know for sure even caused your stroke. You are entitled to your opinion, but this isn't an opinion matter. This is research and data. The danger is that your efforts are scaring people, who could potentially experience the only relief they've ever had in their lives, from receiving safe, effective treatment.

I have recently received several responses to this lens and Answers on Yahoo that accused me of attacking the chiropractic community without the scientific research to back my claims. The individual-- a chiropractic student and researcher-- tried to site a study at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18204390.

I am not a student or professional researcher, but I am not an idiot, either and I have a right to have my own opinion. I have no hidden agenda (unlike the chiropractic community that has a financial motivation) and just want to inform the public that there are risks in cervical manipulation.

There are many other studies out there contradict the one you listed, even on the same page that you referenced: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12743225?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=2&log$=relatedarticles&logdbfrom=pubmed
