In exchange for teaching five years in an elementary or secondary school in an area that serves low-income families, teachers can have a percentage of their outstanding Stafford loans forgiven for each year of service. The total amount of loan forgiveness is up to $17,500 in principal and interest.

Nurses: Get Your Student Loans Forgiven

The U.S. government's Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program helps registered nurses who serve for two years in a non-profit health facility reduce the amount of their student debt. In exchange for serving two years in a qualified facility, nurses can reduce the amount of their loan indebtedness by 60%. In return for an optional third year of service, nurses can have 25% of their initial loan balance forgiven.
