Totoro - Spirit of the Forest

My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) is one of Hayao Miyazaki's most loved movies and one of the top children children's animations of all time.

Released by Studio Ghibli in 1988, it tells the story of two young girls who go to live in the country to be nearer to their mother who is ill in hospital. As they explore their surroundings, they discover a group of forest spirits living under a nearby Champhor tree.

Totoro is hugely popular all over the world and especially in Japan where a huge amount of Totoro products are available from pencils right through to wooden clocks. This merchandising arm developed when demand for a Totoro plush was so high that Studio Ghibli had to produce more in order to satisify their fans. The revenue from this now reportedly funds a major part of the film studio's running costs - allowing them to create new and wonderful pieces of animation.

I have included a selection of the many fantastic Totoro products on sale below.

Studio Ghibli

Hayao Miyazaki founded the creative powerhouse, Studio Ghibli in 1985 together with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki after the commercial success of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It was, and still is unusual in that the studio gave the directors full control over their material - providing a place in which to create without boundaries. The name is taken from the Italian word for a 'hot wind blowing through the desert'.

Luckily the gamble paid off and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, the first movie to be officially released by under the studio name did well at the box office. To date, Studio Ghibli has produced almost 20 feature-length movies including Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and the 2002 Academy Award winning, Spirited Away.

A guide to My Neighbor Totoro

What is Totoro? (Taken from Nausicaa Net)

Totoro is a completely fictional character. He is a mixture of several animals: tanukis (the Japanese version of raccoons), cats (the pointed ears and the facial expressions), and owls (the chevron markings on their chests and the "ooo"-ing sound they make with their ocarinas at night).

The name "Totoro" comes from Mei mispronouncing the word "tororu", which is the Japanese word for "troll".
