...when you wish upon a star...
This lens is inspired by Lewis Smile and his Stuff We Wish Existed HQ! He did a lens where he listed five things he wished existed, and I thought that was a cool lens idea.
So, without further ado, here are five things I wish existed...
#5 ... THE VOIGHT-KAMPFF EMPATHY TEST
from the movie BLADERUNNER
When you consider the human atrocity on the planet these days, it seems that having a machine that could actually perform a Voight-Kampff test and measure a person's emotional responses wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.Instead of worrying about honesty or dishonesty, what if we tested people to see if they had an emotional identification with others? How would that change something like politics? Or war crimes trials? Or class action lawsuits?
Take an online Voight-Kampff Bladerunner trivia quiz! I tested as "Nexus 6," knowing more about Bladerunner than 99% of the people my age and gender who took the quiz.

#4 ... SELF-DRIVING CARS
from the movie MINORITY REPORT
It wasn't the look of this car that attracted me, although you gotta admit that part is kinda sweet, but the function or rather how it could function. This car had the option to drive itself after you told it where you wanted to go. And you could sit in the back and just do something else while you traveled. I've never owned a car and haven't driven in over fifteen years, but this is an idea I could get into.
And as an idea, we're getting there with this one, however given the rise of people have car crashes from following their on-board GPS system instructions, a good deal of development is still needed.

#3 ... AUTOMATIC MAKEUP BOXES AND NAIL POLISH CHANGERS
from the movie THE FIFTH ELEMENT
There are two wonderful makeup gadgets in the movie THE FIFTH ELEMENT. Either of these would make my life much more carefree and playful, not to mention colorful! The first is called "a makeup box." It's a slim black case, almost like one of those old Viewmaster Viewers, but when it's held up to Leeloo's (Mila Jovovich) face, there's a flash like an old-fashioned camera and suddenly her whole face is made up with high-fashion makeup. Eyes, lips, the works.
The second lovely device is a nail polish changer used by Zorg's (Gary Oldman) receptionist. She's holding a tiny box in one hand and inserts one fingernail after another into the box. Nails go in one color, come out another one. You could change both hands over in about two minutes. And then you could do it again, and again, and again.
Seems I'm not the only fan of these cute little timesavers. Cinematical voted these #6 out of their list of 7 movie gadgets they want to see.
As for that nail polish gizmo, here's how far along that baby is coming.

on invention
We are more ready to try the untried when what we do is inconsequential. Hence the fact that many inventions had their birth as toys.

- Cereal has played a huge part in my life, personally. There was a mystique about it throughout my childhood...do I conform to the 'cool' cereals of the moment, and bring the worthless premiums to school with me to brag to my friends? Or do I just cave in and get some Count Chocula. Here's a few of the odder cereals that've crossed my path during life...some of which were by no means edible, but somehow were ingested nonetheless.

- For those of us who grew up reading science fiction and/or comic books, the list reads like the margin notes of every classic supervillain's world-domination handbook. For some actual enlightenment, I recommend a different guide, Brave New Words: The Oxford Dictionary of Science Fiction, the polished dead-tree version of the OED's Science Fiction Citations Web site (found via SFSignal). From the latter resource, with the addition of some personal selections from Wikipedia, I have gathered a list of 75 Words Every Science Fiction Fan Should Know. Because if you're going to learn obscure words and concepts, it may as well be terms you're actually likely to use.
#2... MEMORY AND EXPERIENCE RECORDING
from the movie STRANGE DAYS
The ability to record and re-experience a significant moment has got to be one of man's biggest dreams. To be able to share something that you heard, saw and felt EXACTLY as you had the experience is something that is presently beyond us, even with all our various forms of art and communication.
I don't doubt that there would be a variety of vigorous markets for a wide range of material and experiences if this sort of thing ever comes into existence. The proliferation of niche interests on the Internet pretty much guarantees that.
The trailer for this movie is also noted for being the first ever movie trailer shot in digital video.

and the #1 thing I wish existed is ... TRANSPORTERS!
from the tv and movie STAR TREK universe
In the 60s film EASY RIDER, Jack Nicholson's character waxes poetic about alien life one night. He mentions that the aliens are able to transport themselves all equally and without effort, remarking what a blow such an advance would have on human life if such technology became possible. The transporter systems found in the television shows and movies of STAR TREK are pretty much that. Movement of people and shipments of goods across a planet would become very effortless with such technology.
Until transporters get invented, these inspirational ST posters might offer some words of comfort and support.
