StumbleUpon - Social Bookmarking Phenomenon

 

StumbleUpon is the best way of finding cool stuff on the Internet.

No matter what you're interested in, all you have to do is hit the stumble button!

To get started, just visit StumbleUpon.com to create an account and install the tool bar.

As a StumbleUpon user, you can then rate this page.

How It Works 

Stumble upon uses clever computer algorithms to learn what you like and show you the pages that you want to see.

There are three main ways that it does this:

  • When you set up an account, you tell it what your interests are by selecting from a range of categories. Stumbleupon already knows what the best sites are in each category, and will be happy to direct you to them.

  • As you use the toolbar to rate pages as "I like it" or "I don't like it", a profile is built up which gets better with every action you take. This can then be used to estimate your interest in similar content.

  • Adding other stumblers as friends indicates that you have similar tastes, and would be interested in viewing pages that they like. Adding a friend is like subscribing to the pages they have bookmarked and recommend. It's a good idea to browse other people's blogs and add a few friends as early as possible to help stumbleupon start building your profile.

The Voting System 

Every time you rate a page you are casting a vote for it as either good or bad.

Within each category there are some pages that everyone loves. Quality content quickly rises to the top and is highlighted for everyone to see.

The more positive votes a page receives, the more often it will be shown when people hit the stumble button.

Your Blog 

This is where you can add extra comments about pages you visit, and more strongly recommend any content that you were particularly impressed with.

You can also add tags to help classify the content.

Over time, all of the best pages get lots of reviews and comments posted about them. As you browse the wed, it's quite interesting, and sometimes very useful to hit the comments button on your toolbar and find out what other people have said.

Another popular use of the blog is to share pictures. Some of the best blogs are more like a virtual art gallery, featuring graphics from all over the Web.

How to Make the Most of StumbleUpon 

The more you use it, the better it gets. Just relax, explore and have some fun!

Here's a few things you may want to try:

  • Add lots of friends. You could start by browsing the top stumblers page, and there is a useful "similar stumblers" section on your "network" page which shows you other users with similar interests. Feel free to hit the contact button on another members blog, this is a very social network.

  • Join some groups. Groups are yet another way to share and discuss content on a particular topic. If you can't find an appropriate group, start one!

  • Check out the buzz page on a daily basis. All the best stuff ends up here sooner or later.


Once you get used to this, surfing the web will never be the same again. Some people are so enthusiastic about this system that they wear t-shirts to promote it! (see below).
