StumbleUpon 101

StumbleUpon is a very addictive social networking website which is all about discovery, sharing, and "peer recommendation" of websites. The central behind this is that you are randomly served up web pages according to one of a number of user selected criteria such as pages on a particular area of interest or those of your friends. As of Feb 2008, the most popular social bookmarking site according to Alexa was StumbleUpon (with 31%), and following were Del.icio.us with 21% and Digg with 19%.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started on using StumbleUpon.

Step #1: What's StumbleUpon all about?

StumbleUpon according to Wikipedia

StumbleUpon is an Internet community that allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos. It is a personalized recommendation engine which uses peer and social-networking principles.

Web pages are presented when the user clicks the "Stumble!" button on the browser's toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which Web page to display based on the user's ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. Users can rate or choose not to rate any Web page with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and clicking the Stumble button resembles "channel-surfing" the Web. There is also one-click blogging built in as well.

Toolbar versions exist for Firefox, Mozilla Application Suite and Internet Explorer, but also works with some independent Mozilla-based browsers.

eBay acquired StumbleUpon in May 2007 for $75,000,000.

Step #2: Go to StumbleUpon and Sign up for an account

This is where it all begins

The first thing you need to do is to go to the official StumbleUpon website (http://www.stumbleupon.com) and sign up for an account.

Sorry, this is mandatory

The next thing you will need to do is to download the StumbleUpon toolbar. Sorry, if you really want to participate in this social bookmarking community, you WILL NEED to download the toolbar. The toolbar enables you to vote and comment on each stumble that you make, as well as do other cool stuff.

What do you like to see?

Before you start your stumbling career, you will need to tell StumbleUpon what kind of sites you would like to see. Do this at the Stumbles option page.

Chronicling how technology and spirituality impacts our everyday lives

What has technology got to do with spirituality? Well, a human race immersed in technology alone will not survive if it doesn't find its soul and spirit. Everyone has a heart shaped vacuum that yearns for a creator, regardless of the technology prevailing at the time.
