But why is it called St Valentine's Day and why is it that we celebrate it specifically on 14th February? Who was the man we call St Valentine and where and when did he live? St Valentine and the origins of Valentine's Day

The future St Valentine was a Roman Catholic priest during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd Century AD. At the time, Claudius was experiencing difficulty in persuading men to leave their families and loved ones to fight in his army, so he adopted the novel and extreme approach of cancelling all marriages and engagements to "free" the men of their commitments. Sympathetic to the plight of many young lovers, Valentine continued to marry them in secret until - perhaps inevitably - his activities were uncovered. He was sentenced to be beaten to death by clubs and subsequently beheaded on 14th February, 269 AD.

Who sent the very first Valentine's Card - and why?

Romantic fiction...or historical fact - judge for yourself!

It is - surprisingly enough - alleged that it was St Valentine himself who sent the very first message that would only much later take the recognised form of a Valentine's card. Legend has it that during his time in prison whilst awaiting execution, his guard's young daughter used to visit him in his cell and that the two became firm friends. On the day therefore that he was to be executed, Valentine left her a note, thanking her for her words of comfort and friendship, signing it, "Love from your Valentine."
